Trump weighs tariffs on China for Russian oil

President Trump is contemplating levying tariffs on China for purchasing Russian oil, amid complex US-China relations. Previously, the US doubled tariffs on India, sparking Indian criticism. Trump's decision on China remains pending.

Trump weighs tariffs on China for Russian oil

New York, Aug 11 (PTI) — President Donald Trump has not yet made a decision regarding the imposition of levies on China for its purchase of oil from Russia. Vice President J.D. Vance noted that Washington's relationship with Beijing involves numerous considerations that extend beyond the Russian situation.

Speaking to Fox News Sunday, Vance stated, "The President said he's thinking about it, but he hasn't made any firm decisions." The inquiry related to whether Washington might subject China to significant tariffs, similar to those imposed on India, for buying Russian oil.

Vance explained, "The China issue is a bit more complex due to our multifaceted relationship with China, which has implications beyond the Russian context," adding that Trump continues to review options and will announce a decision in due time.

Previously, the US had enacted a 25 percent tariff on India, and Trump recently announced another 25 percent levy, increasing the total duties on India to 50 percent — among the highest imposed by the US globally. This new tariff takes effect on August 27.

India criticized the decision as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," the external affairs ministry in Delhi expressed, reassuring that India will take necessary actions to safeguard its national interests.
