Colombo, Sep 2 (PTI) - Indian tourists have once again topped the list of foreign visitors to Sri Lanka in August, as per early figures released by the Tourism Development Authority on Tuesday.

During the month, Sri Lanka welcomed 198,235 tourists, a significant increase from the 164,609 visitors recorded in the same period last year, according to the Authority.

India maintained its leading position with 46,473 tourists arriving in August. The United Kingdom followed with 17,764 visitors, while Germany contributed 12,500 to the tally.

Other significant markets included China, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Japan.

In total, the first eight months of the year saw 1,566,523 foreign tourists visiting the island nation. Indian tourists accounted for 325,595 of these visitors, followed by the UK with 151,000, and Russia with 118,000 tourists.

The data from the Tourism Development Authority highlighted a 20.4 percent rise in foreign tourist arrivals in August compared to the same period last year.

Visitor numbers for August were largely consistent with pre-crisis figures, nearly matching the 200,359 arrivals recorded in August 2018, as reported by The Daily Mirror newspaper.
