US-China Deal on TikTok: Key Developments and Implications

President Trump announced productive talks with China on TikTok, amid US security concerns about its data handling. The app's popularity surged during the pandemic, inspiring features from Instagram and YouTube.

US-China Deal on TikTok: Key Developments and Implications

WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (AP) - President Donald Trump recently announced on his social media platform that discussions between US and Chinese officials had been productive, with a deal reached concerning a company that is popular among young Americans. The statement implies that TikTok, the well-known social media company with ties to China, is the focus, as US regulations mandate its sale or cessation of operations.

While the Republican president has repeatedly pushed back the deadline for decisions regarding TikTok, he remained noncommittal about the agreement during a conversation with reporters on Sunday night. Trump also mentioned that he plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

There has been no immediate response from Chinese authorities regarding this matter.

TikTok is one of over a hundred applications developed over the last decade by ByteDance, a tech company established in 2012 by Chinese entrepreneur Zhang Yiming, with its main office located in Beijing's Haidian district.

Initially launched in China as Douyin in 2016, ByteDance later introduced an international version known as TikTok. It then acquired the lip-syncing platform Musical.ly, popular among teenagers in the US and Europe, integrating it with TikTok while maintaining Douyin as a separate app.

The app quickly surged in popularity across the US and other nations, marking the first Chinese platform to gain significant traction in Western countries. Unlike other social media platforms that prioritize building user connections, TikTok focuses on delivering content tailored to individual interests.

The light-hearted videos and music clips shared by creators contributed to TikTok's reputation as a vibrant online space where users could experience amusement and authenticity. The platform’s rise even helped launch the careers of music artists like Lil Nas X.

During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, TikTok solidified its status with viral short dances becoming a staple. To compete, Instagram and YouTube introduced their own short-form video tools, named Reels and Shorts respectively. By this time, TikTok had already established itself as a significant hit.

However, challenges accompanied TikTok’s success. US officials raised concerns due to the company's Chinese origins and ownership, citing Chinese laws that require companies to provide data to the government upon request. Another point of contention is TikTok's proprietary algorithm that determines the content users see. (AP) SKS SKS
