Greta Thunberg Faces Deportation After Gaza Aid Mission

Greta Thunberg Faces Deportation After Gaza Aid Mission

Jerusalem, June 10 (AP) - Activist Greta Thunberg is facing deportation from Israel, according to statements from the Foreign Ministry and a legal rights group supporting her.

The deportation followed the seizure of a Gaza-bound vessel by the Israeli military, on which Thunberg was a passenger.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry posted a photo of Thunberg aboard a flight to France on the social media platform X, confirming her departure from Israel.

Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel which is representing Thunberg and fellow activists, stated that Thunberg, along with two activists and a journalist, agreed to depart Israel voluntarily.

Other activists who have refused deportation measures remain in detention, with their cases awaiting review by Israeli authorities.

Thunberg was among 12 individuals on the Madleen, a vessel transporting aid intended for civilians in war-torn Gaza.

The boat was intercepted by Israeli naval forces approximately 200 kilometers off the Gaza coast, as reported by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the organizing entity behind the mission.

The ship, escorted by the Israeli navy, reached the Israeli port of Ashdod by Monday evening, according to the Foreign Ministry of Israel.

The activists clarified that their mission aimed to protest the ongoing conflict and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Conversely, Israel claims that such missions contravene its naval blockade of Gaza.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry characterized the activists' journey as merely a public relations campaign, commenting on social media: “The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel.”
