Thaksin Returns to Bangkok Amid Imprisonment Threat

Bangkok, Sep 8 (AP) - Thailand's ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made an unexpected return to Bangkok on Monday after his brief stint in Dubai. His arrival comes just a day before a court ruling that could potentially result in imprisonment for him.

Thaksin was observed exiting the private jet terminal at Don Mueang International Airport via a live-streamed video on Monday afternoon. Last week, he stated his intention to travel to Singapore for a medical checkup; however, his plans changed as he was delayed by Thai immigration.

Due to the delay, his plane couldn't land at Singapore's Seletar Airport, a facility serving small aircraft, before its 10 p.m. closure. Thaksin has resided in Dubai since 2008 during his self-imposed exile, and he mentioned having regular physicians in the city.

The Thai Supreme Court is scheduled to decide on Tuesday if there were any missteps by officials concerning his return to Thailand in 2023. This could result in the commencement of an eight-year sentence for Thaksin, relating to three separate cases involving graft and abuse of power. (AP)
