Indian-origin US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has won the Democratic primary from Illinois with a decisive mandate, successfully overcoming a highly communal campaign run by his opponent Junaid Ahmed.
Krishnamoorthi, 48, who is very popular in the eighth Congressional District of Illinois, defeated Ahmed with over 71 per cent of the votes.
"I am honoured that the Democratic primary voters in Illinois' eighth Congressional District voted in an overwhelming and decisive fashion in support of my re-election campaign for Congress," Krishnamoorthi said.
"My constituents want peace, progress and prosperity. In Congress, I have for the middle class, for women's reproductive rights, and against inflation and increasing gas prices. I will continue to work tirelessly to address these issues in the important months ahead," he said.
He has been serving as the US representative for Illinois’s 8th congressional district since 2017.
Krishnamoorthi's parents are from Tamil Nadu.
The three-term Congressman, who was born in New Delhi, faces Republican Chris Dargis in the November 8 general elections.
"We now turn our attention to November, where our fundamental freedom and human rights are on the ballot," Krishnamoorthi added.
Last month, he was honoured with the Distinguished Leadership Award in recognition of his outstanding career and dedication to public service.

Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have embarked on a “crazy, macho war” against Ukraine if he were a woman, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.
In an interview with the German media at the end of the G7 Summit in Schloss Elmau this week, Johnson pointed to Putin’s machismo as a contributory factor in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
He also called for more women in “positions of power” as one of the measures towards global peace.
“If Putin was a woman, which he obviously isn’t, if he were, I really don’t think he would have embarked on a crazy, macho war of invasion and violence in the way that he has,” Johnson told broadcaster ZDF.
“If you want a perfect example of toxic masculinity, it’s what he is doing,” he said, referring to the 69-year-old Russian president.
During the recent G7 Summit in Germany, leaders of the powerful bloc mocked Putin over his infamous bare-chested picture atop a horse.
Asked about Johnson's remarks, the prime minister's official spokesman said that "there is not a deliberate policy", adding: "The British public would expect leaders to be robust with someone killing innocent civilians on a daily basis."
Johnson's comments come ahead of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) meeting in Madrid where western allies will discuss how to respond to future threats.
At the summit, Johnson is set to call on fellow members of the defensive alliance to ramp up defence spending.
Meanwhile, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced new sanctions to target Putin’s “inner circle”, including Vladimir Potanin -- Russia’s second richest man and owner of major conglomerate Interros.
Potanin continues to amass wealth as he supports Putin’s regime, acquiring Rosbank, and shares in Tinkoff Bank in the period since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the FCDO said.
Anna Tsivileva, Putin’s cousin and President of the prominent Russian coal mining company, JSC Kolmar Group, has also been sanctioned.
Tsivileva’s husband Sergey Tsivilev is Governor of the coal rich Kemerovo region and the couple have significantly benefited from their relationship to Putin. JSC Kolmar Group is also being sanctioned.
“As long as Putin continues his abhorrent assault on Ukraine, we will use sanctions to weaken the Russian war machine. Today’s sanctions show that nothing and no one is off the table, including Putin’s inner circle,” a UK government spokesperson said.The UK government said it is also sanctioning a group of Russian individuals and companies for their involvement in repressing civilians and supporting the Assad regime in Syria.

The image shows a patchwork of white zig-zags, shaped like polygons, spread across Martian soil on high latitudes with random sprays of some black and blue mist spread out between them. These zig-zags are typical of Martian springs. Seasons on the Red Planet are similar to Earth in numbers, however, each of those seasons are twice as long as those on Earth. Spring on Mars continues for over 190  days whereas on Earth it is just 90 days long. 
University of Arizona which handles the Mars Orbiter says that the polygons have formed because of water ice that that is frozen in the soil. Water and dry ice, both play a major role in forming Mars' surface on higher latitudes. 
The edges of the polygons crack and fray during spring when surface ice transforms from solid into a gaseous state through sublimation. When this happens, vents of dry ice spray out of Mars' surface, leaving dark, fan-shaped deposits of particles spread across the ground, researchers at University of Arizona said. 
A single ice vent may open and close multiple times, resulting in particles spraying in different directions across the planet's surface. As the particles are sprayed depending on the wind, some areas appear darker and some lighter. 
The camera onboard the Mars Reconnassaince Orbiter is called the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HIRISE). The orbiter, which began its journey in 2006 has captured a varying amount of image, including ones of the Valles Marineris, the largest canyon in our solar system (consequently the known largest canyon in our universe). In a joint statement titled '2022 Resilient Democracies Statement' issued here on Monday during the G7 Summit, the leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said they are prepared to defend these principles and are resolved to protect the freedom of expression.
The joint statement came amidst allegations that the Indian government was stifling the freedom of speech and the civil society actors.
The leaders said democracies enable open public debate, independent and pluralistic media and the free flow of information online and offline, fostering legitimacy, transparency, responsibility and accountability for citizens and elected representatives alike.
The leaders said they resolved to "protecting the freedom of expression and opinion online and offline and ensuring a free and independent media landscape through our work with relevant international initiatives." They promised to guard the freedom, independence and diversity of civil society actors, speak out against threats to civic space, and respect freedom of association and peaceful assembly.
The leaders pledged to ensure an open, free, global, interoperable, reliable and secure internet; increase the cyber resilience of digital infrastructure, including by improving and sharing awareness of cyber threats and expanding cyber response cooperation and counter hybrid threats, in particular, information manipulation and interference, including disinformation.
They also resolved to cooperate to counter information manipulation, promote accurate information and advocate for shared democratic values worldwide.
They vowed to promote affordable access to diverse sources of reliable and trustworthy information and data, online and offline, including through a multi-stakeholder approach, and by strengthening digital skills and digital literacy.
They also pledged to enhance transparency about the actions of online platforms to combat violent, extremist and inciting content online in line with the Christchurch Call to Action.
The Christchurch Call is a commitment by governments and tech companies to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.
They said democracies "lay and protect the foundations for free and vibrant civic spaces, enabling and encouraging civic engagement and political participation, which in turn stimulate meaningful legitimacy, creativity, innovation, social accountability, and responsibility." The leaders said they are committed to building resilience against malign foreign interference and acts of transnational repression that seek to undermine trust in government, society and media, reduce civic space and silence critical voices.
The leaders pledged to advance programmes for the protection of human rights defenders and all those exposing corruption; promote academic freedom and strengthen the role of scientific evidence and research in democratic debate; protect civic space, and uphold transparent, accountable, inclusive and participatory governance, including by advancing women’s full, equal and meaningful participation and leadership in civic and political life.
The Group of Seven (G7) is an inter-governmental political grouping consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US.
Besides India, Germany, the host of the G7 Summit, had also invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa as guests for the summit to recognise the democracies of the global south as its partners.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, still under the shadow of the partygate scandal of Covid law-breaching parties in Downing Street, has been hit with yet another drunken scandal as an ally in charge of discipline within the governing party resigned.
Chris Pincher, 52, stepped down as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Conservative Party on Thursday night after admitting in his resignation letter that he "drank far too much" and "embarrassed myself and other people". There have been growing calls for Johnson to suspend him from the party after allegations emerged of him groping two men at a private members’ club in London.
"Last night I drank far too much," reads Pincher’s resignation letter.
"I think the right thing to do in the circumstances is for me to resign as deputy chief whip. I owe it to you and the people I've caused upset to, to do this," he said.
‘The Sun’ newspaper first reported the resignation, saying the senior Conservative MP was drinking at the Carlton Club in central London when he is said to have assaulted two other male guests. Several concerned Tory MPs contacted the Conservative whips' office to complain about his behaviour, the paper claims.

Neil Chandran, of Las Vegas in Nevada, was arrested on Wednesday in Los Angeles, the Department of Justice said.
According to the indictment, Chandran owned a group of technology companies that he used in a scheme to defraud investors by falsely promising extremely high returns on the premise that one or more of his companies, operated under the banner of “ViRSE,” was about to be acquired by a consortium of wealthy buyers.
Chandran’s companies — which included Free Vi Lab, Studio Vi Inc., ViDelivery Inc, ViMarket Inc, and Skalex USA Inc, among others — developed virtual-world technologies, including their own cryptocurrency, for use in the companies’ own metaverse.
The indictment alleges that Chandran caused other individuals to make various materially false and misleading representations to investors, including that investors in his companies would soon receive extremely high returns when one or more of those companies was purchased by a group of wealthy buyers.
In fact, according to the indictment, there was no such buyer group that was about to purchase the companies for the claimed returns; a substantial portion of the funds was misappropriated for other business ventures and the personal benefit of Chandran and others, including the purchase of luxury cars and real estate; and there were no prominent billionaires involved in purchasing Chandran’s companies.
Chandran is charged with three counts of wire fraud and two counts of engaging in monetary transactions in the criminally derived property.
If convicted, Chandran faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the wire fraud counts and up to 10 years in prison for each count of engaging in unlawful monetary transactions.
The indictment also alleges that 100 different assets — bank accounts, real estate, and luxury vehicles, including 39 Tesla vehicles — are subject to forfeiture as proceeds of the fraud.
US Marshals and the FBI are seizing most of the assets pending the resolution of the criminal case.

According to a CNN report, the ship hit what is called a 'growler' - an iceberg that is less than two meters across and has less than one meter showing above the water. 
The report said that the ship has sustained damage to the front portion on its right side. 
The nine-night cruise was cancelled and it returned to its home port of Seattle for repairs.
