Sri Lanka Seeks To Join BRICS, Seeks Support Of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa

Sri Lanka, under the newly formed government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, will apply for membership in the BRICS.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said the nation considered the inter-governmental grouping to be an effective partnership to realise aspiration for mutually beneficial cooperation, peace and development, through strengthened and inclusive multilateralism, according to local media reports.

Herath said neither he nor the President would be able to attend the BRICS Summit in Russia on October 23rd and 24th, but the foreign secretary would represent Sri Lanka, and place the membership request on record.

Sri Lanka has already sought the support of member states Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates joined BRICS as new members in 2024.
