Indian-Origin Singaporean Woman Jailed for Bribery and Drug Use

Singapore, August 29 (PTI): An Indian-origin Singaporean woman, Radika Rajavarma, has been sentenced to over five years in prison after attempting to bribe police officers with SGD 1,000 to let her smoke a cigarette while she was in custody in 2022. Radika, 42, pleaded guilty on Thursday to several charges, including drug consumption and offering a bribe, according to The Straits Times. She has had frequent run-ins with the law on drug-related charges since 2018 and was last convicted for methamphetamine consumption in 2020, receiving a three-and-a-half-year sentence. After being released on bail in June 2022, she was placed on a five-year remission order. However, she was rearrested on July 29, 2023, for drug consumption when her urine samples tested positive for methamphetamine. She was charged two days later and released on bail the same day. Despite these charges, Radika continued to miss required urine tests and court appointments, leading to another arrest in October. Deputy Public Prosecutor Emily Koh revealed that Radika was allowed to smoke a few cigarettes following her arrest on October 4, 2022. While being transported in a police vehicle, Radika requested one final cigarette. When officers denied her request due to her custody status, she attempted to bribe them with SGD 1,000, which they refused. The court sentenced Radika to five years, eight months, and four weeks in jail. Additionally, she will serve another 256 days for breaching the remission order.
