Safe Extraction of 31 Workers from Collapsed LA Tunnel

Los Angeles, Jul 10 (AP) – Thirty-one workers have been safely extracted from an industrial tunnel under construction in Los Angeles following a partial collapse on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

The incident took place 8 to 9.7 kilometers from the tunnel's only entrance, located in an industrial area of the city. Aerial footage from local television depicted workers being lifted out through the tunnel's access point.

Some workers managed to scramble over a 12 to 15-foot-high pile of loose soil, connecting with colleagues on the opposite side of the collapsed section. Subsequently, they were transported in groups by tunnel vehicle to the entrance.

Paramedics assessed 27 of the workers after their removal from the tunnel.

The tunnel, which measures 18 feet in width, is under construction with the purpose of eventually carrying wastewater, according to LAFD. Over 100 LAFD personnel, including specialists trained in confined space rescues, were deployed to the scene. (AP)
