Taiwan's military began a live-fire artillery exercise on Tuesday simulating a defence of the island against an attack by China amid massive military drills conducted by Beijing over the past week.
The drills, reportedly, started in the southern county of Pingtung and include the deployment of several troops and howitzers.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's foreign minister, reportedly, accused China of 'preparing for an invasion'. Joseph Wu said that Beijing is using air and sea drills encircling the island and to change the status quo in the Asia-Pacific region.
China launched its largest-ever war drills around Taiwan in response to a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking US official to visit the self-ruled island in 25 years. The visit was seen by China as the US undermining the 'One China Policy.'
China views its neighbour Taiwan as part of Chinese territory to be reclaimed one day.

The US announced another $1 billion in new military aid for Ukraine on Monday, pledging what will be the biggest yet delivery of rockets, ammunition, and other arms straight from Department of Defense stocks for Ukrainian forces.

The US announced another $1 billion in new military aid for Ukraine on Monday, pledging what will be the biggest yet delivery of rockets, ammunition and other arms straight from Department of Defense stocks for Ukrainian forces.
The U.S. pledge of a massive new shipment of arms comes as analysts warned that Russia was moving troops and equipment in the direction of the southern port cities to stave off a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
The aid includes additional rockets for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, as well as thousands of artillery rounds, mortar systems, Javelins and other ammunition and equipment. Military commanders and other U.S. officials say the HIMARS and artillery systems have been crucial in Ukraine&rsquo;s ongoing fight to try to prevent Russia from taking more ground.
U.S. assistance totals $9 billion
The latest announcement brings the total U.S. security assistance committed to Ukraine by the Biden administration to more than $9 billion since Russian troops invaded in late February.
&ldquo;At every stage of this conflict, we have been focused on getting the Ukrainians what they need, depending on the evolving conditions on the battlefield,&rdquo; Colin Kahl, undersecretary of defense for policy, said in announcing the new weapons shipment.
Until now, the largest single security assistance package announcement was for $1 billion on June 15. But that aid included $350 million in presidential drawdown authority, and another $650 million under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which provides funding for training, equipment and other security needs that can be bought from other countries or companies.
Monday's package allows the U.S. to deliver weapons systems and other equipment more quickly since it takes them off the Defense Department shelves.
Focus on Donbas
For the last four months of the war, Russia has concentrated on capturing the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, where pro-Moscow separatists have controlled some territory as self-proclaimed republics for eight years. Russian forces have made gradual headway in the region while launching missile and rocket attacks to curtail the movements of Ukrainian fighters elsewhere.

Kahl estimated that Russian forces have sustained up to 80,000 deaths and injuries in the fighting, though he did not break down the figure with an estimate of forces killed.
He said the Russian troops have managed to gain &ldquo;incremental&rdquo; ground in eastern Ukraine, although not in recent weeks. &ldquo;But that has come at extraordinary cost to the Russian military because of how well the Ukrainian military has performed and all the assistance that the Ukrainian military has gotten. And I think now, conditions in the east have essentially stabilized and the focus is really shifting to the south.&rdquo;
The new funding is being paid for through $40 billion in economic and security aid for Ukraine approved by Congress in May.
This is the 18th time the Pentagon has provided equipment from Defense Department stocks to Ukraine since August 2021.
No new HIMARS
The package does not include any new HIMARS, but provides rockets for it, although officials did not disclose how many. The U.S. has already provided 16 HIMARS to Ukraine.
&ldquo;These are not systems that we assess you need in the hundreds to have the type of effects&rdquo; needed, Kahl said, in response to questions about why the U.S. wasn't sending more of the powerful rocket systems. &ldquo;These are precision-guided systems for very particular types of targets and the Ukrainians are using them as such.&rdquo;
The U.S. and its allies still are evaluating whether to supply aircraft to Ukraine, Kahl said. It's &ldquo;not inconceivable that western aircraft down the road could be part of the mix,&rdquo; he said.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelinskyy early in the war launched near-daily calls for warplanes, calling them essential to protecting Ukraine's skies. The U.S. and some other NATO countries feared that could draw them into more direct involvement with Ukraine's war against Russia, and have not provided Western aircraft.

Actor Ezra Miller has been charged with felony burglary in Stamford, Vermont, the latest in a string of incidents involving the embattled star of “The Flash.”
In a report Monday (8 AUGUST 2022), Vermont State Police said they responded to a burglary complaint in Stamford on May 1 and found several bottles of alcohol were taken from a residence while the homeowners weren't present. Miller was charged after police consulted surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses.
The police report said Miller was located shortly before midnight Sunday and was issued a citation to appear for arraignment in Vermont Superior Court on Sept. 26.
The felony charge adds to Miller's mounting legal woes and reports of erratic behavior. The 29-year-old actor was arrested twice earlier this year in Hawaii, including for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar. The second incident was for second-degree assault.
The parents of 18-year-old Tokata Iron Eyes, a Native American activist, also earlier this year filed a protection order against Miller, accusing the actor of grooming their child and other inappropriate behavior with her as a minor from the age of 12. Tokata Iron Eyes recently told Insider that those allegations were false.
Attorneys for Miller didn't immediately respond to requests for comment on the Vermont felony charge or the protection order related to Tokata Iron Eyes.
After appearing in several films for Warner Bros. and D.C. Films as the Flash, Miller stars in the upcoming standalone film “The Flash,” due out in June 2023. Though Warner Bros. last week axed the nearly completed “Batgirl” film, the studio has suggested it remains committed to releasing “The Flash.”
In an earnings report last week, David Zaslav, chief executive of Warner Bros. Discovery referenced “The Flash.” “We have seen ‘The Flash,’ ‘Black Adam’ and ’Shazam 2. We are very excited about them," said Zaslav. "We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

Former President Donald Trump talked politics in a phone call to a rally for a Republican senatorial candidate in Connecticut Monday evening.
Trump did not mention the raid on his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, by the FBI.
In a lengthy statement Monday, Trump said that the FBI was conducting a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate and asserted that agents had broken open a safe.
The circumstances of the search were not immediately clear, though the Justice Department has been actively investigating the discovery of classified information in boxes of records that were taken to Trump's Florida residence after he left the White House.
The action marks a dramatic escalation in law enforcement scrutiny of Trump and comes as he has been laying the groundwork to make another bid for president.
"After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate," Trump said in his statement.
Justice Department spokesperson Dena Iverson declined to comment on the search, including about whether Attorney General Merrick Garland had personally authorized the search.
The discovery of classified information at Mar-a-Lago was referred to the Justice Department by the National Archives and Records Administration, which said it had found classified material in 15 boxes at the residence.
Federal law bars the removal of classified documents to unauthorized locations, though it is possible that Trump could try to argue that, as president, he was the ultimate declassification authority.

A top commander of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Omar Khalid Khorasani and three other top militant leaders have been killed in a mysterious blast in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province, a Pakistani media report said on Monday.
A vehicle carrying senior commanders of the militant group, including Khorasani, was on Sunday targeted with a mysterious explosive device, according to Afghan officials and local sources, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.
The top militants were travelling in the Birmal district of the province for a meeting when their vehicle hit a roadside mine, the report said.
All aboard the vehicle, also carrying other TTP commanders such as Abdul Wali Mohmand, Mufti Hassan, and Hafiz Dawlat Khan, were killed in the explosion, The Express Tribune quoted a senior Afghan official as saying.
According to a local source, the TTP leaders were travelling “for consultation” when their vehicle hit a roadside mine on Sunday.
Khorasani, who belonged to the Mohmand tribal district, was considered a top member of the TTP -- the militant group which wants to impose the law of Sharia across Pakistan. Khorasani, who carried a bounty of Rs 10 million on his head.
Hafiz Dawlat from the Orakzai tribal district was an important member of the group and a close trustee of Khorasani, while Mufti Hassan hailed from the Malakand division and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the deceased leader of the Islamic State terrorist organisation.
TTP intelligence chief Abdul Rashid alias Uqabi Bajauri was also killed in a landmine blast in Kunar province of Afghanistan on Sunday morning, according to local Afghan sources.
The TTP is yet to confirm these targeted killings of its top commanders, an incident that would certainly undermine the Afghan Taliban-brokered peace negotiations between the TTP and the Pakistan government.
The news comes after the outlawed group and Pakistan reached a deadlock during their talks as the outfit refused to budge from its demand for the reversal of the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, the report said.
No group so far claimed responsibility for the targeted killing of TTP leader, which comes at a critical juncture when talks between the rebels and Pakistan have failed to move forward over the issue of the militant’s demand to reverse the merger of the tribal region into Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Hundreds of TTP activists had fled to Afghanistan when their sanctuaries were destroyed after successive operations by the Pakistan army, following the horrendous attack at a Peshawar school in 2014.
Pakistan hoped after the Taliban took over Kabul last year in August that they would not allow the TTP to operate from Afghan soil but instead of expelling the rebels, who supported them during their struggle against the NATO troops, the Taliban asked Pakistan to sort out the issue through talks.
The powerful Haqqani group of the Afghan Taliban has been leading the role of a facilitator but so far without any success.

All aboard the vehicle, also carrying other TTP commanders such as Abdul Wali Mohmand, Mufti Hassan, and Hafiz Dawlat Khan, were killed in the explosion, The Express Tribune quoted a senior Afghan official as saying.
According to a local source, the TTP leaders were travelling &ldquo;for consultation&rdquo; when their vehicle hit a roadside mine on Sunday.
Khorasani, who belonged to the Mohmand tribal district, was considered a top member of the TTP -- the militant group which wants to impose the law of Sharia across Pakistan. Khorasani, who carried a bounty of Rs 10 million on his head.
Hafiz Dawlat from the Orakzai tribal district was an important member of the group and a close trustee of Khorasani, while Mufti Hassan hailed from the Malakand division and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the deceased leader of the Islamic State terrorist organisation.

TTP intelligence chief Abdul Rashid alias Uqabi Bajauri was also killed in a landmine blast in Kunar province of Afghanistan on Sunday morning, according to local Afghan sources.
The TTP is yet to confirm these targeted killings of its top commanders, an incident that would certainly undermine the Afghan Taliban-brokered peace negotiations between the TTP and the Pakistan government.
The news comes after the outlawed group and Pakistan reached a deadlock during their talks as the outfit refused to budge from its demand for the reversal of the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, the report said.
No group so far claimed responsibility for the targeted killing of TTP leader, which comes at a critical juncture when talks between the rebels and Pakistan have failed to move forward over the issue of the militant&rsquo;s demand to reverse the merger of the tribal region into Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Hundreds of TTP activists had fled to Afghanistan when their sanctuaries were destroyed after successive operations by the Pakistan army, following the horrendous attack at a Peshawar school in 2014.
Pakistan hoped after the Taliban took over Kabul last year in August that they would not allow the TTP to operate from Afghan soil but instead of expelling the rebels, who supported them during their struggle against the NATO troops, the Taliban asked Pakistan to sort out the issue through talks.
The powerful Haqqani group of the Afghan Taliban has been leading the role of a facilitator but so far without any success.

It also warned that Beijing will organise regular combat patrols as a new normal to enforce its one-China policy.
Initially, the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) announced the war games in the busy Taiwan Strait from August 4 to 7, the day after Pelosi who is the highest-ranking US leader to have visited Taiwan in 25 years, left Taipei after high-level meetings. It later kept extending them, keeping the breakaway island on tenterhooks.
The Chinese military exercises involved hundreds of warplanes, dozens of naval ships, including an aircraft carrier group with nuclear submarine in tow, amid assertions by the official media here that such war games in the busy Taiwan Strait will be a new normal.
The PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command said in a statement on Wednesday that the joint military operations around the Taiwan island have been “completed successfully”.
But the PLA will organise regular combat patrols in the Taiwan region and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity after successfully completing its recent training exercises around Taiwan, Senior Colonel Shi Yi said.
The state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Shi as saying that the Eastern Command will keep a close eye on the changing situation in the Taiwan Straits, carry out training and war preparation, regularly organise combat-ready police patrols across the Taiwan Straits, and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The drills involved forces drawn from all wings of the PLA in the Taiwan Strait virtually laying siege to the breakaway island which Beijing claims as part of its mainland, sparking global concerns of possible military assault by China to annex Taiwan.

A day after the popular Pakistan television station ARY News, critical of the government, was taken off air for allegedly airing “seditious” content, the outlet’s Senior Executive Vice President Ammad Yousaf was arrested from Karachi in the early hours of Wednesday, the channel said.

Yousuf&rsquo;s arrest comes after the channel, which is the country&rsquo;s biggest private broadcaster, was served a show-cause notice by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

Yousuf&rsquo;s arrest comes after the channel, which is the country&rsquo;s biggest private broadcaster, was served a show-cause notice by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday.
ARY News said that a raiding team in plain clothes broke into Yousaf's house in the middle of the night. It has termed Yousaf&rsquo;s arrest as retaliation by the government against the channel.
ARY News received a notice from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) which said that the channel was taken off air &ldquo;for airing objectionable, hateful, seditious, based on absolute disinformation with clear and present threat to national sec by instigating rebellion within the armed forces with malafide intent to cause rift between govt and forces&rdquo;.
PEMRA has also directed the channel&rsquo;s CEO to appear in person for a hearing on August 10.

The World Health Organization expressed sorrow on Tuesday for the killing of monkeys in Brazil amid fears of monkeypox contagion.
Brazilian news website G1 reported on Sunday that 10 monkeys had been poisoned in less than a week in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, in Sao Paulo state.
Similar incidents were reported in other cities.
“People have to know that the transmission we see now is among humans,” said Margaret Harris, a WHO spokeswoman, during a press conference in Geneva.
Brazil counts more than 1,700 cases of monkeypox, according to the WHO.
The country's health ministry confirmed one death related to the disease on July 29.
The victim was a was a man who had low immunity and comorbidities.
Contagion can take place from animals to humans, but the recent outbreak is related to human only contacts, according to Harris.
“People certainly should not attack the animals,” she said.
Brazil has a long register of attacks on monkeys during yellow fever outbreaks too.
Since May, nearly 90 countries have reported more than 29,000 cases of monkeypox.
The WHO classified the outbreak of the once-rare disease as an international emergency in July.
