Russia claims attack on its border post, Ukraine rubbishes it as fake news

Amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, Moscow on Monday claimed that a shell fired from Ukraine destroyed one of its border posts.

Reports from Russia claimed that a shell fired from Ukrainian territory completely destroyed a Russian border guard post in Rostov region. No casualties have been reported in the incident.

Ukrainian military, however, has denied shelling the border facility, terming Moscow's claim as "fake news".

Shelling across the line dividing Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine has intensified since Thursday.

Russia has maintained that it has no intentions to invade Ukraine and has claimed to have withdrawn a large number of troops from the border areas. The West, however, is sceptical of Russia's intentions.

In what appeared to be a last-ditch diplomatic gambit brokered by French President Emmanuel Macron, the White House said US President Joe Biden has agreed “in principle” to a meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin as long as he holds off on launching an assault that US officials warn appears increasingly more likely.
