Quad: China sent fighter jets near Japan as PM Modi, others met in Tokyo; Russian planes also joined

In what could be seen as a provocation targeted at the Quad, China sent its fighter jets for sorties over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea. The incident occurred as Quad leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met in Japan's Tokyo on May 24.

The Chinese fighter aircraft were joined by Russian jets for the sorties. Japan said that it had expressed "grave concerns" to Beijing and Moscow over the flights.

Japan's defence minister Nobuo Kishi said that two Chinese bombers joined two Russian bombers in the Sea of Japan and made a joint flight to the East China sea. Subsequently, the planes flew to the Pacific ocean.

A Russian intelligence-gathering plane also flew off northern Hokkaido to the Noto peninsula, as per the Japanese minister.

Tokyo said that China taking such action in collaboration with Russia amid the Ukraine war is a "cause for concern".
