In a dramatic turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly faced an assassination attempt involving a Ukrainian drone strike during his visit to the Kursk region on May 20. The claim, made by Russian military officer and air defense unit commander Yuriy Dashkin, suggests that the president's helicopter found itself in the midst of an intensified airspace confrontation.

According to the Russian news agency RBC, Dashkin disclosed that Russian air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone allegedly targeting Putin's flight path. This incident unfolded amidst what was described as a massive Ukrainian drone offensive against Russia, occurring from May 20 to May 22, during which Russian defense forces reportedly neutralized a staggering 1,170 drones.

Dashkin highlighted the marked increase in the intensity of drone attacks concurrent with Putin's aerial transit over Kursk, characterizing the encounter as an "unprecedented attack." The air defense unit was engaged in both an aerial skirmish and protective measures to secure the safe passage of the presidential helicopter, according to Dashkin.

The officer asserted that the neutralization of a drone approaching the president’s flight path was a critical moment, ensuring Putin's safety during his visit to the region, his first since March.
