Pope Leo XIV Meets Israeli President Amid Gaza Tensions

Rome, Sep 4 (AP) — Pope Leo XIV held discussions on Thursday with Israeli President Isaac Herzog amidst ongoing tensions in Gaza. While Israel advances its military operations, the Vatican remains steadfast in its call for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Herzog was greeted at the Apostolic Palace, accompanied by a motorcade, and passed by the iconic Swiss Guards upon his arrival.

Prior to their meeting, Herzog's office anticipated discussions would revolve around efforts to secure the release of hostages, combat global antisemitism, and protect Christian communities in the Middle East.

The statement from Herzog's office indicated that the visit was “at the invitation of the pope.” However, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified otherwise, suggesting the meeting was requested by Herzog.

“The Holy See typically grants audience requests from heads of state and government; invitations are not ordinarily extended to them,” Bruni explained in a statement on Tuesday.

Although Herzog largely holds a ceremonial role, the former Labour party leader has emphasized unity and compromise during his tenure.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas took 251 hostages in a devastating attack that led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 people. Though many hostages have since been released, Israel managed to secure the release of eight hostages alive. Of those believed to still be in Gaza, officials estimate around 20 are alive.

The Vatican, continuing its stance of diplomatic neutrality, has advocated for the return of hostages while condemning Israeli attacks on Gaza civilians.

Pope Francis previously condemned the military actions in Gaza as “immoral” and disproportionate, urging an inquiry into potential genocide claims. Israel refutes the genocide allegations, maintaining it targets only militants and attempts to avoid civilian casualties, blaming Hamas for operating within densely populated areas.

Pope Leo, the first American pope elected in May after Francis' passing, continues to reinforce his predecessor's strict message. He demands the release of hostages and condemns what he terms Israel’s “collective punishment” and the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza.

In a recent address, the 69-year-old former missionary called for a lasting ceasefire, safe passage of humanitarian aid, and strict adherence to humanitarian law. (AP)
