Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir Set for US Visit: Key Discussions on Agenda

Islamabad, Aug 7 (PTI) – Pakistan's Army Chief, Asim Munir, is slated to visit the United States this week for high-level consultations with American officials. This will mark his second visit to Washington since the brief conflict with India, according to a media report published on Thursday. In June, Munir made a rare five-day trip to the US, which included a private luncheon with then-President Donald Trump. The meeting concluded with an announcement of heightened US-Pakistan cooperation across various domains, including a significant oil deal. Following Munir's visit, the Dawn newspaper reported that he is expected to engage with his American counterparts. This follows General Michael Erik Kurilla's trip to Pakistan in late July. Kurilla heads the US Central Command (CENTCOM). CENTCOM's August 4th press statement highlighted Kurilla's visit to Pakistan and other regional nations. During this visit, the Pakistani government awarded Kurilla the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military). Makes a notable visit, Munir was previously welcomed by President Trump, an honor usually reserved for heads of state or government. Although there is no official confirmation from Inter-Services Public Relations or Pakistan's Washington embassy, Munir hinted during his previous visit that he anticipated returning to the US later in the year. This visit comes, as the US general recently praised Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner" in counterterrorism at a congressional hearing, lauding its role in promoting peace and stability in the region. After meeting Trump in June, Munir engaged in thorough discussions with scholars, analysts, policy experts, and major international media representatives in Washington. His visit followed the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan, which erupted after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Relations between the US and Pakistan have experienced tension following the covert US operation in May 2011 that resulted in al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden's death in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
