Pakistan seeks international help to tackle flood emergency

Battered by overwhelming floods in the country, Pakistan has sought world help to tackle the situation. The south-asian nation is facing heavy monsoon showers for weeks now that has left over 1,000 people dead. The extreme flooding has also forced people to move out of their houses.

While Pakistan’s army chief has urged countrymen to come forward and help flood victims, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Pakistan’s Foreign minister has appealed for world aid amid the worsening situation. Zardari said that the country is already facing a massive economic crunch and the flooding emergency has only added to the country’s misery, the Guardian quoted.

Following the cry for help, flights from Turkey and Israel were dispatched with relief material on Monday. The disaster has so far affected 33 million people. The UK has also decided to provide up to £1.5 million for the relief effort. The aid is expected to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday.

Moreover, Pakistan’s climate minister has warned that one-third of the country could be submerged by the time this year’s ‘monsoon’ recedes.
