Pakistan to Preside Over UNSC in July 2025

Islamabad, Jul 1 (PTI) — Pakistan is poised to take over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday for July 2025, state media reported. This role is part of Pakistan's two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, which started in January 2025.

Pakistan secured its position as a non-permanent member with strong backing from UN members, obtaining 182 out of 193 votes. The presidency, which rotates monthly among the 15 council members in alphabetical order, comes to Pakistan this month.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized Pakistan's commitment to a "transparent, inclusive, and responsive" presidency as he spoke with the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) at the UN in anticipation of the upcoming challenges.

Presiding over key meetings on global issues during July, Ambassador Iftikhar acknowledged the complex geopolitical landscape, which includes growing instability and threats to international peace and security, evidenced by escalating conflicts and intensifying humanitarian crises.

Pakistan plans to host two significant high-level events focusing on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, as well as cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). According to Iftikhar, these topics underscore the shared priorities of promoting multilateralism, preventive diplomacy, and regional collaboration in pursuit of global peace and security.

Attention will also be directed toward critical global issues such as the situation in West Asia and developments in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar has already convened with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the Council's agenda for July. "As a nation that consistently endorses dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan offers a principled and balanced perspective shaped by its own history and sustained contributions to UN peacekeeping and peace-building missions," the Pakistani envoy remarked.

"We are eager to collaborate with all Council members for swift, collective action aligned with the Council’s core responsibilities under the Charter and the expectations of the larger UN membership," he added.

Pakistan has previously served on the Council during 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993-94, 1983-84, 1976-77, 1968-69, and 1952-53.
