Pakistan Stresses Unity on 79th Independence Day Amid Tensions

Islamabad, Aug 14 (PTI) President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to rise above divisions and unite for the progress of Pakistan, as the nation marked its 79th Independence Day. Both leaders conveyed heartfelt congratulations to Pakistanis globally, reflecting on the courage, unity, and sacrifices that led to the country's creation, reported by Radio Pakistan.

In his message, President Zardari expressed a sense of renewed pride and hope, acknowledging the nation's reaffirmed strength and unity against external challenges, referencing recent tensions with India. He claimed a "victory" in the brief conflict, stating it boosted national confidence and enhanced Pakistan's global standing.

India's Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeted terror sanctuaries in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following an attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed 26 civilian lives. The conflict concluded on May 10 after four days of intense cross-border exchanges.

Zardari reiterated Pakistan's steadfast support for Kashmiris and emphasized defending national interests. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the commitment to sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, and resolving disputes through dialogue. He urged India to demonstrate similar will, especially concerning Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharif also invited political parties and societal groups to collaborate with the government in safeguarding national interests. Senior military leaders, including Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, extended Independence Day congratulations on behalf of the Armed Forces.

The day began with a 31-gun salute in the capital and 21-gun salutes in provincial centers. Special prayers were offered in mosques for the nation’s peace and prosperity. The main ceremony at Pakistan Monument in Islamabad saw Prime Minister Sharif unfurl the national flag, while buildings were adorned with flags and lights to celebrate the occasion.
