New Zealand PM announces resignation: Jacinda Ardern to step down by Feb 7; elections on Oct 14

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced her resignation on 19 January 2023.

She said that she will step down as the PM by 7 February, and the next general elections will take place on 14 October. Ardern will continue as a lawmaker till then.

She said that she did not have "enough in the tank" to do her job justice. Ardern, who was PM for nearly 6 years, added that with such a privileged role, comes the responsibility to know when one is not the right person for the job.

Ardern faced a tough election campaign this year. Her liberal Labour Party won re-election two years ago in a landslide of historic proportions, but recent polls have put her party behind its conservative rivals.
