Netanyahu Welcomes Lebanon's Move to Disarm Hezbollah by 2025

Netanyahu supports Lebanon's plan to disarm Hezbollah by 2025, potentially leading to an Israeli troop withdrawal. Dialogue continues amid US pressure and past conflict losses.

Netanyahu Welcomes Lebanon's Move to Disarm Hezbollah by 2025

Jerusalem, August 25 (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed approval for the Lebanese cabinet's significant decision made earlier this month to aim for the disarmament of Hezbollah by the end of 2025. The move holds the potential for Israel to withdraw its troops from the region.

Netanyahu stated that should Lebanon take the appropriate actions to disarm Hezbollah, Israel would reciprocate with corresponding measures, which would include a gradual pullback of Israeli military forces from southern Lebanon.

Since the cessation of hostilities in November between Israel and Hezbollah, facilitated by a US-mediated ceasefire, Hezbollah has maintained that they will not negotiate disarmament until Israel relinquishes control of five strategic hills within Lebanese territory and ceases nearly daily airstrikes that have resulted in numerous casualties, predominantly affecting Hezbollah members.

Meanwhile, Beirut is facing pressure from the United States to disarm the faction that engaged in a prolonged 14-month conflict with Israel. The war left Hezbollah significantly weakened, with substantial losses among its political and military leadership. (AP)
