Nepal's PM Karki Confirms Scheduled General Elections

Kathmandu, September 29 (PTI) Newly-appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki of Nepal affirmed on Monday her interim government's resolve to conduct the upcoming general elections on schedule.

Karki, aged 73, assumed office on September 12, concluding a period of political uncertainty following the removal of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. His ouster came after youth-led Gen Z protests against his administration, fueled by allegations of corruption and a controversial social media ban.

During her message for Bada Dashain, a prominent Hindu festival in Nepal also known as Vijaya Dashami, Karki reassured citizens that the elections for the House of Representatives will proceed as planned, as per reports by the Himalayan Times.

Extending her best wishes on this festive occasion, Prime Minister Karki expressed desires for peace, prosperity, and happiness for all Nepalis, both domestically and abroad.

President Ramchandra Paudel, in his address, echoed the call for holding elections on time.

He urged citizens to retain composure and to support the ongoing functions of the government and parliament.

"Let the scheduled election be held on time, and let everyone remain calm and extend the necessary support and cooperation to ensure the continuity of a parliament and government chosen by the people, to resolve all types of problems facing the nation, to achieve quick relief from the current situation, and to work for the welfare of the entire nation. May Goddess Durga provide strength for this," the president stated.

President Paudel further wished for the nation’s peace, stability, effective governance, and prosperity.

On September 23, Prime Minister Karki conferred with President Paudel concerning the timely execution of the general elections. Following their discussion, President Paudel enacted an ordinance modifying the voter registration act, facilitating the inclusion of new voters ahead of the general election scheduled for March 2026.

At Karki's recommendation, President Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and declared March 5 as the date for the forthcoming elections.

Nepal currently has 18,16,800 eligible voters for the impending parliamentary elections.
