Nepal PM Karki Confirms March 2026 Elections With President Paudel

Kathmandu, Sep 24 (PTI) — Nepal's Prime Minister Sushila Karki met with President Ramchandra Paudel on Wednesday to discuss ensuring the timely conduct of the general elections scheduled for next year.

The meeting took place at the President House, Sheetal Niwas, just a day after Prime Minister Karki engaged with Election Commission officials regarding election preparations.

Karki, aged 73, assumed the role of prime minister on September 12, concluding a period of political instability following the removal of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. Oli's ouster came amid intense protests by the youth-driven Generation Z group over charges of corruption and restrictions on social media.

At the prime minister's urging, President Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and set March 5 as the date for new elections.

Reliable sources from the President's Office indicated that the discussion between Karki and Paudel covered the political and security climate as well as the forthcoming March 5, 2026, election for the House of Representatives and the current security environment in the country.

On Tuesday, Karki had a comprehensive discussion with acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, addressing issues such as necessary legal reforms, election management, and resource allocation.

Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, who participated in the talks, reported to journalists that the conversation focused on identifying potential challenges and resolving any issues that could hinder election preparations.

Currently, the estimated number of eligible voters, those above 18 years of age, stands at 18,168,000. However, the announcement of new elections necessitates reopening voter registration, according to an official from the Election Commission.
