NATO Chief Rutte Meets Trump Amid Russo-Western Tensions

Washington, Jul 14 (AP) NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is set to arrive in Washington today for discussions with President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as well as members of Congress. The talks will emphasize transatlantic security relations and the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Russia.

In a recent statement, President Trump commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin, remarking that Putin “talks nice and then he bombs everybody.” In response, the United States has decided to send Patriot missiles to Kyiv and has plans to sell weaponry to NATO allies, which they can then transfer to Ukraine. Trump has hinted at a “major statement” on Russia, expected on Monday.

Over the weekend, Trump also proposed new 30% tariffs on Mexico and the European Union, to be implemented on August 1 despite ongoing negotiations. In addition, he hinted at a potential 35% tax on Canadian goods and mentioned a possible 50% tax on goods from Brazil, aimed at influencing the criminal trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Meanwhile, a federal judge issued an order halting indiscriminate immigration stops and arrests in seven California counties, including Los Angeles. The order came after plaintiffs, including two U.S. citizens, accused the administration of systematically targeting individuals based on ethnic appearance.

In Europe, trade ministers are assembling in Brussels to devise a response to Trump's surprise tariff announcement concerning the European Union. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated, “We should prepare to be ready to use all the tools in the toolbox,” emphasizing the importance of being prepared while seeking a deal.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, addressing reporters in Brussels, stressed the significance of negotiations after Trump's announcement of 30% tariffs on all EU goods from August 1. The European Union initially planned to impose countermeasures starting at midnight on Monday. Von der Leyen declared that while a negotiated solution is preferred, the EU is preparing countermeasures to ensure readiness.

Mark Rutte's visit includes a scheduled meeting with Trump in the Oval Office at 10 a.m. ET. The agenda is expected to cover the continued sale of weapons to European allies, which can be transferred to Ukraine. Trump's growing frustration with President Putin might lead to a significant announcement on Monday.
