Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US, a top American official said that India is a vibrant democracy, and anybody can visit Delhi to see it for themselves.
John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, made the comments on June 5, 2023. He said that the strength and health of democratic institutions will be part of the discussions between Modi and US President Joe Biden.
"Look, we never shy away. And you can do that with friends. You're supposed to do that with friends. You never shy away from expressing concerns that we might have with anyone around the world. But this (State) visit is really about advancing what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going forward," Kirby said in response to a question.
"There are innumerable reasons why India certainly matters, not just bilaterally between the two of our nations, but multilaterally on very many levels. And the president is looking forward very much to having Prime Minister Modi here to talk about all those issues and to advance and deepen that partnership and that friendship," Kirby said.

Banks of photographers and camera crews gathered outside London's High Court in anticipation of Harry's arrival for opening speeches in the case.
But his lawyer, David Sherborne, said Harry will not take the stand until Tuesday, as he had been celebrating his daughter Princess Lilibet's second birthday and only flew to the UK late Sunday.
That earned him a rebuke from the judge Timothy Fancourt, who said he was "a little surprised" that the prince was not in court on Monday.
Sherborne said stories about Harry were clearly a money spinner for tabloids and started when he was aged 11.
The pursuit of stories by illegal methods even continued after "the tragic death of his mother" Princess Diana in a Paris car crash in 1997 while she was being pursued by photographers.
"No aspect of the young prince's life was safe" from press intrusion and Harry's phone "would have been hacked on multiple occasions", he submitted.
MGN's lawyer Andrew Green said there was "no evidence" the prince's phone was hacked "let alone on a habitual basis" and that payment records used in the claim "do not demonstrate" unlawful information-gathering.

In the statement that was also posted across the royal social media channels, the 74-year-old monarch speaks of the special place in his heart for India and reflects upon his fond memories of a visit to Odisha 43 years ago.
&ldquo;I do hope you know what a special place India and the people of India have in our hearts. I have particularly fond memories of visiting Odisha in 1980 and meeting some of its people on that occasion," it said.

The message follows several condolence messages from the UK government, including from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who extended his &ldquo;heartfelt support and admiration to the survivors and those working tirelessly to respond&rdquo; to the accident.
On Sunday, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the Odisha train tragedy.

The calf had a lucky escape as it was handed to a villager after Slamet's prayers instead of being sacrificed to the volcanic cauldron.
Some villagers who do not belong to the Tengger tribe took to the crater's steep slopes equipped with nets in an attempt to intercept offerings thrown into the abyss and avoid them going to waste.
Farmer Joko Priyanto brought some of his own produce in the form of cabbages and carrots to lob down into the smoky void.
"I hope I will receive a reward from the almighty God," the 36-year-old said.

Monday's ritual was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that authorities had allowed tourists to the site after the festival was limited to worshippers last year.
The event has its roots in 15th-century folklore from the Majapahit kingdom, a Javanese Hindu-Buddhist empire that stretched across Southeast Asia.
Legend has it that Princess Roro Anteng and her husband, unable to bear children after years of marriage, begged the gods for help.
Their prayers were answered when they were promised 25 children, as long as they agreed to sacrifice their youngest child by throwing him into Mount Bromo.
Their son is said to have willingly jumped into the volcano to guarantee the prosperity of the Tengger people.
For shopkeeper Rohim, who travelled from a nearby Javan city on Monday to launch potatoes, leeks and cash into the lava, it was a chance to pray for good luck. He said his fortunes had improved following previous visits.
"Business has been better than before, hence my coming here," the 32-year-old said.
"I'm hoping my business can improve so next year I can come back."

Prince Harry on Tuesday became the first senior British royal to give evidence in a high court trial in over 100 years as he appeared in the witness box to allege "utterly vile" unlawful information gathering, including by phone hacking, by journalists working for the Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).
The 38-year-old Duke of Sussex accused the tabloid newspapers of &ldquo;inciting hatred&rdquo; against him as a young royal and casting him as a &ldquo;thicko&rdquo;, &ldquo;cheat&rdquo;, &ldquo;underage drinker&rdquo;, and &ldquo;irresponsible drug taker&rdquo; -- referring to some of the media labels he felt associated with over the years.
"I genuinely feel that in every relationship that I've ever had &ndash; be that with friends, girlfriends, with family or with the army, there's always been a third party involved, namely the tabloid press," reads his witness statement released as Harry gave oral evidence in court.
"As a teenager and in my early twenties, I ended up feeling as though I was playing up to a lot of the headlines and stereotypes that they wanted to pin on me mainly because I thought that, if they are printing this rubbish about me and people were believing it, I may as well 'do the crime', so to speak,&rdquo; he said.
"It was a downward spiral, whereby the tabloids would constantly try and coax me, a 'damaged' young man, into doing something stupid that would make a good story and sell lots of newspapers. Looking back on it now, such behaviour on their part is utterly vile," he added.
The royal said he decided to go to the court to hold people to account for what they have done and that he was "determined to get to the bottom of it once and for all&rdquo;.
Harry, who stepped back as a working royal and now lives in the US with his wife Meghan Markle and two children Archie and Lilibet, has said that the deceptive methods used by MGN newspapers impacted his personal life.
He alleges that the &lsquo;Daily Mirror&rsquo;, &lsquo;Sunday Mirror&rsquo;, and &lsquo;Sunday People&rsquo; were linked to methods including phone hacking, so-called &ldquo;blagging&rdquo; or gaining information by deception, and use of private investigators, between 1996 and 2010 to get detailed information about his private affairs.
MGN disputes the allegations and also argued that some of the claimants who are part of the representative legal action have brought their case too late. Their lawyers are expected to cross-examine Prince Harry in the witness box this week.
Meanwhile, the royal&rsquo;s lawyer on Monday told the hearing as it opened that &lsquo;Mirror&rsquo; journalists listened to voicemail messages from Princess Diana &ndash; Harry&rsquo;s late mother.
"Nothing was sacrosanct or out of bounds and there was no protection from this unlawful information gathering," David Sherborne told the court, alleging that the ups and downs of Harry&rsquo;s relationship with ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy were among those gained via unlawful means.
The Prince alleges around 140 articles published between 1996 and 2010 contained information gathered using unlawful methods and, according to court reports, 33 of these have been selected to be considered at the trial.
Justice Timothy Fancourt, who is presiding over the trial at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, had expressed &ldquo;surprise&rdquo; that Harry was not in court at the start of the trial but was told that he had flown in from Los Angeles only on Sunday night as it was daughter Princess Lilibet&rsquo;s second birthday on June 4.
The last time a senior royal took to the witness stand in an English High Court trial was in 1891 when the then Prince of Wales was called to give evidence in a gambling case dubbed the Royal Baccarat Scandal.
At the time, the future King Edward VII was brought to court to give testimony over a tricky case of cheating in a game of cards that the royal happened to be present at.&nbsp;

79-year-old Robert Hanssen was found unconscious in his cell at a federal prison in Florence, Colorado, and was later pronounced dead, the Associated Press reported. He is believed to have died of natural causes.
Hanssen started giving classified information to Moscow in 1985, and in return got $1.4 million in cash, diamonds and bank funds over 16 years, as per the FBI.
He had been serving a sentence of life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to 15 counts of espionage and other charges in 2001.
The FBI has been notified of Hanssen's death, according to the Bureau of Prisons. He had been serving time in Colorado since July 2002.
