French police have been accused of using excessive force -- both by protesters and rights bodies -- and this has further fuelled the anger of demonstrators.
In eastern Paris, police fired tear gas and launched a charge after some protesters, dressed in black with their faces covered, raided a grocery store and started a fire as the march closed in on Place de la Nation.
Police said at least 27 people were arrested in the capital by the afternoon.

Protesters delayed trains at Gare de Lyon, one of the busiest stations in Paris, walking on the rails and lighting flares in what they called a show of solidarity for a railway staffer who lost an eye in a previous protest.
In the western city of Nantes, protesters threw projectiles at security forces who fired back tear gas, an AFP reporter said. A bank was set on fire as were rubbish bins around the city.
Police deployed water cannon in the southeastern city of Lyon and tear gas in the northern city of Lille after protesters caused damage including smashing a bus stop.
Rubbish collectors in Paris are from Wednesday suspending a three-week strike that has seen thousands of tonnes of garbage accumulate in the capital, the CGT union said.
But it said the move was to allow workers' coordination to "go on strike again even more strongly" as fewer workers were now striking.
Nearly two weeks after Macron forced the new pensions law through parliament using a special provision, unions have vowed no let-up in mass protests to get the government to back down.
A state visit to France by Britain's King Charles III, which had been due to begin on Sunday, was postponed because of the unrest.

Officials further elaborated saying Hale left behind a manifesto, had maps of the school detailing surveillance and entry-exit points, and was "prepared for a confrontation with law enforcement.&nbsp;
In an interview with NBC News, the Nashville police chief said the suspect was likely plotting a broader attack, as the manifesto "indicates that there was going to be shootings at multiple locations, and the school was one of them."
Armed with at least two assault rifles and a handgun, Hale entered The Covenant School, a Christian academy, from a side entrance, allegedly shooting through a door -- firing multiple shots while advancing through the building, according to police.&nbsp;

It said the victims had "different nationalities" but did not mention them or provide a breakdown.
The channel said the bus had "car trouble", without specifying, while the private newspaper Okaz said the accident resulted from an issue with the brakes.
The vehicle "then collided with a bridge, overturned and caught fire".
Footage broadcast on Al-Ekhbariya showed a reporter standing in front of what appeared to be the burnt-out shell of the bus.
Transporting worshippers around Saudi Arabia's holy sites is a perilous task, particularly during the hajj, when roads can be chaotic with buses creating interminable traffic jams.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake did not say exactly what drove the shooter to open fire Monday morning at The Covenant School before being killed by police. But he provided chilling examples of the shooter's elaborate planning for the targeted attack, the latest in a series of mass shootings in a country that has grown increasingly unnerved by bloodshed in schools.
&ldquo;We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we're going over that pertain to this date, the actual incident,&rdquo; he told reporters. &ldquo;We have a map drawn out of how this was all going to take place.&rdquo;
He said in an interview with NBC News that investigators believe the shooter had &ldquo;some resentment for having to go to that school.&rdquo; The victims included three 9-year-old children, the school's top administrator, a substitute teacher and a custodian. Amid the chaos a familiar ritual played out: Panicked parents rushed to the school to see if their children were safe and tearfully hugged their kids, and a stunned community held vigils for the victims.
Rachel Dibble, who was at a nearby church where children were taken to be reunited with their parents, described the scene as everyone being in &ldquo;complete shock.&rdquo; &ldquo;People were involuntarily trembling,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;The children &hellip; started their morning in their cute little uniforms, they probably had some Froot Loops and now their whole lives changed today.&rdquo; Police gave unclear information on the gender of the shooter. For hours, police identified the shooter as a 28-year-old woman and eventually identified the person as Audrey Elizabeth Hale.
Then at a late afternoon press conference, the police chief said that Hale was transgender.
After the news conference, police spokesperson Don Aaron declined to elaborate on how Hale currently identified.
Authorities said Hale was armed with two &ldquo;assault-style&rdquo; weapons as well as a handgun. At least two of them were believed to have been obtained legally in the Nashville area, according to the chief. Police said a search of Hale's home turned up a sawed-off shotgun, a second shotgun and other unspecified evidence.
The victims were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all 9 years old, and adults Cynthia Peak, 61; Katherine Koonce, 60; and Mike Hill, 61.

Protestors and political analysts claim that the far-reaching changes if brought into effect, can shake the very democratic foundations of the country.&nbsp;
The proposed reforms have sparked protests from all quarters of the country, with former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, as well as ex-Prime Minister and current opposition leader Yair Lapid and former Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, joining the demonstrations.&nbsp;
The overhaul will give the Israeli government more control over the judiciary. These proposed reforms come in a package of bills, which just need to pass three votes in the Israel parliament or Knesset before they become law.&nbsp;
Adding to the complications is the fact that Israel does not have a written Constitution but rather just a set of rulings passed as basic laws.&nbsp;
According to a recent survey by the Israel Democracy Institute, '66 percent of Israelis think the Supreme Court should have the power to strike down a law if its incompatible with the Basic Laws.' WHAT ARE THE PROPOSED CHANGES?&nbsp;
From giving the Knesset power to override Supreme Court rulings to restricting Supreme Court's ability to overturn laws and most important of all, the selection of judges majorly constitutes part of the changes.&nbsp;
Presently, a nine-member committee consisting of justices and lawmakers select judges to be elevated to the Supreme Court.&nbsp;
Netanyahu plans to bring about a change that will give the government a majority in the committee, thus effectively choosing who it wants to make a judge.&nbsp;
According to the Prime Minister, the country's Supreme Court no longer represents the Israeli citizens and has instead become an insular, elitist group, the CNN reported.&nbsp;
Netanyahu has cited the USA's example where lawmakers have a say in the appointment and approval of federal judges.&nbsp;
The second change troubling protestors is called the override clause. This allows the Israeli parliament to override Supreme Court rulings.
Third proposed change on the list restricts the Supreme Court's ability to overturn laws that it deems unfit or unnecessary.&nbsp;
The fourth reform which has been voted to law by the Knesset gives immunity to the sitting Prime Minister. The new law protects the Prime Minister from being deemed unfit to rule by limiting the reasons to physical or mental incapacity. It also makes it mandatory for the prime minister or two-thirds of the cabinet pass such an order.&nbsp;
Netanyahu, who is in the midst of his own corruption trial facing fraud, bribery charges as well as breach of trust, will be protected through the new bill, according to critics.&nbsp;
Opposition leaders also believe that the bill is a way to safeguard Netanyahu from being deemed unfit for office due to the trial.&nbsp;
Critics are also of the opinion that if the government has more power in choosing who is elected as judge, Netanyahu's supporters and allies will appoint those who will rule in the Prime Minister's favour in his ongoing trial.&nbsp; Netanyahu's corruption trial is also a reason, experts suggest, why the prime minister is hurrying to pass the bills.&nbsp;
WHAT DO THE PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY?&nbsp; &nbsp; According to critics, the proposed changes will completely destroy the only agency that can question the country's legislative branch, cautioning that it will vastly affect the judiciary's independence.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog had called for a halt to the reforms, 'For the sake of the unity of the people of Israel, for the sake of the necessary responsibility, I call on you to halt the legislative process immediately.'
The overhaul has sparked uproar in the country's business, financial, security and academic sectors.&nbsp;
The Israel Democracy Institute survey has also revealed that the reforms are supported by only a minority of Israelis while the vast majority want a compromise to be reached.&nbsp;
While 66% believe that the Supreme Court should hold the power to strike down laws almost 63% are okay with the current method of appointing judges.&nbsp;

After nearly three months of increasing tensions, Netanyahu said in a broadcast: "Out of a sense of national responsibility, out of a will to prevent a rupture among our people, I have decided to pause the second and third readings of the bill" to allow time for dialogue.
Netanyahu spoke after tens of thousands of people demonstrated outside the parliament building in Jerusalem.
The legislation will now be considered further in the next session of parliament, which begins in the second half of April, the prime minister said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday commented on a plan by China to implement peace in Ukraine, welcoming it but saying that it should be closely studied.
&ldquo;Any attempt to work out a plan that would help a peaceful settlement of the conflict deserves attention, and we are viewing the plan proposed by our Chinese friends with great attention,&rdquo; Peskov said in a call with reporters.
&ldquo;As for its details, they must be thoroughly analyzed, and the interests of various parties must be taken into account. It&rsquo;s a very long and difficult process," he said.
He added that &ldquo;we aren&rsquo;t seeing any conditions for a peaceful settlement now,&rdquo; adding that &ldquo;the special military operation is continuing and we&rsquo;re moving toward reaching the goals that have been set.&rdquo;
Asked about the prospect of Chinese arms supplies to Russia, Peskov said such claims have been rejected by China and refused to make any further comment.

Russian energy giant signs deal to boost oil supplies to India

Russian energy giant Rosneft announced a deal on Wednesday to ramp up oil sales to India, as Moscow seeks new buyers in the wake of tensions with the West over the Ukraine conflict.
The Kremlin's decision to deploy its military to Ukraine last February saw Russia's share of the European market collapse as Kyiv's allies levied sanctions on the Russian oil sector.
Rosneft said in a statement that its CEO Igor Sechin had travelled to India and brokered an agreement with the head of the Indian Oil Corporation.
"Rosneft Oil Company and Indian Oil Company signed a term agreement to substantially increase oil supplies as well (as) diversify the grades to India," Rosneft said in a statement.
Rosneft however did not specify the volumes stipulated in the agreement nor its value.
The announcement comes one day after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Moscow's oil sales to India had surged more than twentyfold last year.
Rosneft said that representatives of the two oil companies also discussed the "possibilities of making payments in national currencies," pointing to Russia's efforts to de-dollarise its economy.
Russia, a major producer and key ally of the OPEC oil cartel, cut crude production by 500,000 barrels per day this month in response to the Western sanctions.
Rosneft earlier this month posted a sharp drop in annual profit in the wake of Western sanctions against Russia.

Tsai left on Wednesday for the United States, from where she will head to Guatemala and Belize to shore up ties with diplomatic allies. On her way back to Taiwan she will stop in California, where US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had said he would meet her.
China claims the democratic island as part of its territory to be retaken one day and, under its "One China" principle, no country may maintain official ties with both Beijing and Taipei.
Beijing warned Wednesday that it was "resolutely opposed" to any meeting between Tsai and McCarthy and vowed to take "resolute measures to fight back" if it goes ahead.
"If (Tsai) engages with US House Speaker McCarthy, it will be another provocation that seriously violates the One China principle, undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said.
Tsai's trip follows Honduras's decision this month to open diplomatic relations with Beijing, leaving Belize and Guatemala among just 13 countries that have official ties with Taipei.
"External pressure will not hinder our determination to go global," Tsai told reporters at the airport before leaving. "We are calm and confident. We will not succumb and we will not provoke (others)."

Beijing's foreign ministry said Washington "blindly connives with and supports Taiwan independence and secessionist forces".
Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged the United States at a briefing on Wednesday to stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan and to "stop the dangerous act of undermining the political foundation of China-US relations".

The prohibition went into effect in 2021 amid concerns that so many tourists were swimming with dolphins that the nocturnal animals weren&rsquo;t getting the rest they need during the day to be able to forage for food at night.
The rule applies to areas within two nautical miles (3.7 kilometers) of the Hawaiian Islands and in designated waters surrounded by the islands of Lanai, Maui and Kahoolawe.
The State Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a news release that its enforcement officers came upon the 33 swimmers in Honaunau Bay on Sunday during a routine patrol.
Aerial footage shot by drone shows snorkelers following dolphins as they swim away. The department said its video and photos showed swimmers &ldquo;who appear to be aggressively pursuing, corralling and harassing the pod.&rdquo;
Enforcement officers contacted the group while they were in the water, and told them about the violation. Uniformed officers met the swimmers on land where state and federal officials launched a joint investigation.
Hawaii&rsquo;s spinner dolphins feast on fish and small crustaceans that surface from the ocean&rsquo;s depths at night. When the sun rises, they head for shallow bays to hide from tiger sharks and other predators.
To the untrained eye, the dolphins appear to be awake during the day because they&rsquo;re swimming.
But because they sleep by resting half of their brains and keeping the other half awake to surface and breathe, they may be sleeping even when they&rsquo;re maneuvering through the water.

Paul Stanley Schmidt, 37, was stabbed outside the cafe at the corner of Granville and West Pender streets around 5:40 pm on Sunday following a "brief altercation," according to police. After the incident, he was taken to the hospital where he took his last breath.
Schmidt's mother, Kathy, said he was at Starbucks with his wife and his young daughter, according to Global News.
Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison said police are appealing for more witnesses and video to help them determine a motive in the killing.
"There's a significant amount of evidence to tell us what happened. What we are focusing on now is why did this happen. What are the events that transpired in the moments leading up to this very serious crime ... that's something that may take some time for us to fully understand," he said.
"We believe there are people likely nearby, people who witnessed it, people who were in the area who can help us to understand those questions," he added.
