Monkeypox: WHO's good news announcement as cases drop 21%; warning for Americas

Amid worries that monkeypox might turn into a big healthcare threat even as the world comes to terms with living with Covid, the World Health Organisation announced some good news.

WHO reported a 21% decline in global monkeypox cases, reversing a month-long trend of rising infections.

The global health body signalled a possible decline of the outbreak in Europe which accounted for about 38% of the cases last month. WHO also warned against a "continuing steep rise" in cases in the Americas which accounted for 60% of cases in the past month.

British health authorities said last week that there were “early signs” that the country's monkeypox outbreak was slowing.

More than 45,000 monkeypox cases have been reported so far in 98 countries since late April.
