Modi-Putin Meeting Advocates for Ukraine Crisis Resolution

Tianjin (China), Sep 1 (PTI) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on a Monday, amidst a challenging period in India-US relations exacerbated by President Donald Trump's tariff policies and criticisms. Modi emphasized the urgent need to resolve the Ukraine conflict, advocating for a swift end to hostilities. The meeting, set against the backdrop of complex geopolitical dynamics, saw both leaders highlight their commitment to strengthening economic, financial, and energy collaborations, reflecting a stable growth trajectory in bilateral ties.

Modi, in his opening remarks broadcasted on television, welcomed recent efforts to foster peace in Ukraine and urged relevant parties to advance with constructive dialogue. "The call of humanity is to terminate the conflict swiftly and establish enduring peace in the region," Modi declared. Additionally, he anticipated hosting Putin in India in December for summit discussions, affirming the longstanding close relationship between India and Russia as vital for global peace and stability. Continued cooperation resonates strongly amid the ongoing tensions, particularly with the troubling circumstances concerning Ukraine; the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement echoing these discussions.

Modi reiterated support for initiatives aiming to resolve the Ukraine crisis and called for a rapid end to the conflict with a durable peace agreement. Both leaders pledged to intensify the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between their nations, according to the MEA.
