Over 120 Migrants Intercepted Off Crete Amid Stricter Greek Policies

Greek authorities intercepted over 120 migrants off Crete despite suspended asylum claims and stricter detention rules. Tension rises over plans for a transit facility on Crete as new laws are drafted.

Over 120 Migrants Intercepted Off Crete Amid Stricter Greek Policies

Athens, Aug 18 (AP) Greek authorities have intercepted over 120 migrants off the coast of Crete early Monday, marking the latest incident in an ongoing series of arrivals. This comes despite the suspension of asylum claims and upcoming stricter detention rules.

Two vessels, carrying 58 and 68 individuals respectively, purportedly departed from Libya and were halted. The migrants are currently sheltered under guard. Over the weekend, more than 100 other migrants reached Crete following the subsiding of strong winds.

Last month, the conservative Greek government suspended all asylum claims for migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. Officials argue this measure deters crossings, which saw a peak of over 2,500 in a single week in July.

There is ongoing tension between the government and Crete's regional authorities regarding plans to establish a permanent transit facility on the island.

The government is preparing to introduce draft legislation after the summer recess. The proposed laws would require imprisonment for migrants whose asylum applications are rejected and implement ankle monitors during a 30-day compliance period before deportation.
