Tragedy at Sea: Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Lesbos, Claims Four Lives

Athens, Oct 7 (AP) Four individuals, among them a child, tragically lost their lives when a boat transporting migrants capsized off the eastern Aegean island's coast on Tuesday, as reported by Greece's coast guard.

A patrol boat from the coast guard recovered the bodies of two women, a man, and a young girl from the waters along the southern shores of Lesbos island.

Additionally, they discovered a semi-submerged vessel near a rugged section of the coastline.

A total of thirty-four survivors managed to reach the shore independently and were subsequently located by the police.

A search and rescue mission both on land and at sea was subsequently terminated after the survivors informed authorities that there had been a total of 38 people aboard the boat, and no individuals remained unaccounted for.

The cause of the boat's sinking remains unclear, and authorities have yet to release further information regarding the nationalities of both the survivors and the victims.

Greece remains a primary entry point into the European Union for those escaping conflict and poverty across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Many embark on the short yet dangerous journey from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands in inflatable dinghies or other small, frequently unseaworthy vessels, often resulting in fatal sinkings. (AP) SKS SKS
