Mexican thrown out for troubling women, sets nightclub on fire; 11 dead

At least 11 people were killed and six more injured at a nightclub on Mexico's northern border early on Saturday after a man who had been removed from the venue for disturbing some women returned to set the place on fire, authorities reported.

The incident took place in the city of San Luis Río Colorado, on the border with Arizona, Sonora prosecutor Gustavo Rómulo Salas said.

Although his department initially indicated that the fire had been caused by a petrol bomb and had put the number of injured at four, Salas later updated the figures at a news conference.

He said investigators believed the attacker went to his truck after being removed from the nightclub, extracted fuel from it, sprayed the door of the establishment and started the fire.

Ten people died on the spot and another in hospital.

Of the six injured, one was hospitalized in Sonora on Saturday afternoon, three had crossed into the United States to be treated there and the rest were discharged, the prosecutor said.

Officials said the deceased were seven men and four women, including some members of the group that played at the venue.

Among the dead was a woman with United States nationality and, most likely, dual nationality, and a minor under the age of 17 who was months away from turning 18.

The alleged attacker was detained at a military checkpoint.
