Suspected Arsonist Charged in Melbourne Synagogue Fire Case

Giovanni Laulu is charged in connection with the December 6 fire at Adass Israel Synagogue. Arrested last week, he faces serious charges and remains in custody. The government is funding rebuilding efforts, and police continue a massive ongoing investigation.

Suspected Arsonist Charged in Melbourne Synagogue Fire Case

Melbourne, July 31 (AP) - A 21-year-old suspected arsonist named Giovanni Laulu appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court, accused of setting fire to a synagogue seven months ago. The incident shocked the nation and led to an extensive investigation.

Police claim Laulu, along with two other masked men, used a liquid accelerant to set the Adass Israel Synagogue ablaze in the early hours of December 6. During the attack, a worshipper suffered minor burns while preparing for morning prayers. Laulu's arrest occurred at a Melbourne residence on Wednesday, and he is the first suspect in custody, with the possibility of further arrests, including accomplices allegedly involved from overseas.

In court, Laulu, charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life, and car theft, confirmed his name but remained silent, opting not to enter any pleas or apply for bail. His lawyer mentioned that Laulu has previous prison experience. He was remanded in custody and scheduled to reappear in court on August 6.

Prosecutors requested 12 weeks to collect evidence, highlighting the need to analyze 11 cell phones. Magistrate Brett Sonnett granted them until October 22 to present their case to Laulu's legal team.

The case has drawn in federal and state police as well as the primary domestic intelligence agency, suspecting a political motive behind the crime. More than 220 law enforcement officers have invested over 50,000 hours in the investigation.

State Chief Commissioner Mike Bush emphasized Victoria Police's determination to bring the perpetrators to justice, acknowledging the fear and distress caused within the Victorian community.

“It is paramount that people feel safe, especially in their places of worship. We remain wholeheartedly committed to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for instilling such fear and harm,” said Bush.

Following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing Gaza conflict, Australia has witnessed a surge in antisemitic incidents. The synagogue attack is notably the only event classified as an act of terrorism, garnering increased investigative resources.

Committed to rebuilding the synagogue, the federal government has allocated 30 million Australian dollars (approximately USD 20 million). (AP) NPK NPK
