Liz Truss resigns as UK PM amid pressure over disastrous mini-Budget, exit of 2 ministers

Liz Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 20 October 2022. Truss' 45 days in power marked the shortest tenure of a UK PM.

Making a statement outside her office at 10, Downing Street, Truss said that she could not deliver the mandate on which she had been elected the leader of the ruling Conservative party.

An election to select the next Prime Minister will reportedly be completed within the next week.

Truss had been under pressure since an economic plan unveiled in September triggered financial turmoil. It had led to the ouster of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, but calls for Truss' resignation grew louder within her party.

On 19 October, Home Secretary Suella Braverman had tendered her resignation, saying that she had "concerns about the direction of this government." Braverman had violated rules by sending an official document from her personal email account.
