Japanese PM Extends Condolences Over Air India Crash Tragedy

Tokyo, Jun 13 (PTI) – Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba extended his condolences following the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Prime Minister expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives in the devastating incident.

The ill-fated AI 171 flight, en route to London, met with tragedy shortly after taking off on Thursday afternoon from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It crashed into a medical college complex, resulting in the death of 265 people.

In a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ishiba conveyed his deep grief over the loss of numerous lives. "On behalf of the Government of Japan and the people, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” Ishiba stated in his message.

Ishiba also sent condolences messages to the governments of the UK, Portugal, and Canada, according to the statement.

On board the flight were a total of 242 people, comprising 169 Indians, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals. Out of those aboard, 241 perished in the accident, leaving just one survivor. The crash also claimed lives among the residents of the medical complex.
