Japan, Netherlands sign deal with US to block China's access to smartphone chips: reports

Amid reports of US blocking Chinese tech firm Huwaei's access to American chip suppliers, speculation is rife that Japan and Netherlands have landed a deal with America on banning tech exports to China.

Multiple media reports suggest that an agreement had been finalized between the three countries last week over blocking China's access to smartphone chips and other technology.

A report by 'The Guardian' quoted Don Graves, US Deputy Commerce Department Secretary who hinted at the development saying, "We can’t talk about the deal right now. But you can certainly talk to our friends in Japan and the Netherlands.”

Officials from the two countries were in Washington last week to discuss a wide range of issues with White House NSA Jake Sullivan where an agreement on semiconductors was reportedly also discussed.

China has accused Washington of "technological hegemony" amid reports of US blocking Huwaei's access to American chip suppliers

The Biden administration in October 2022 imposed export controls to limit China's ability to access advanced chips, which it says can be used to make weapons, commit human rights abuses and improve the speed and accuracy of its military logistics. It urged allies like Japan and the Netherlands to follow suit.

China has responded angrily, saying trade curbs will disrupt supply chains and the global economic recovery.
