Iraq PM warns US retaliatory attacks can have disastrous consequences across Gulf region

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudan on February 3 warned that US retaliatory attacks in Syria and Iraq will have disastrous consequences in the Gulf region.

Condemning the strikes, the Iraqi PM in a statement said that it was a "new aggression against Iraq's sovereignty".

In a separate statement, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said the US attacks were a “violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria, international law, and a clear violation of the United Nations Charter”.

“The attacks merely support the goals of the Zionist regime. Such attacks increasingly involve the US government in the region and overshadow the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza,” it said, referring to Israel.

“The continuation of such adventures is a threat to regional and international peace and security,” it added, urging the United Nations Security Council and the international community to prevent the expansion of the crisis.

The Iranian statement said the “roots of the tension and crisis in the region go back to the occupation by the Israeli regime and the continuation of this regime’s military operations in Gaza and the genocide of the Palestinians with the unlimited support of the US”.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden indicated that the attacks would continue. Earlier, America said that it targeted militants in several locations in Iraq and Syria in a retaliatory action against the drone attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan.

The US said it struck 85 targets in response to last Sunday's deadly drone attack, with Biden warning, "If you harm an American, we will respond"

The White House has blamed an Iran-backed militia umbrella group for the attack that killed three US soldiers.

The Iraqi government has said at least 16 people, including civilians, have been killed by the strikes and 25 others wounded. Damascus also said that a number of civilians have been injured in Syria.
