Iran Forms Supreme National Defence Council Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran, Aug 4 (AP) - In response to June attacks by Israel and the United States, Iran has established a new defence council, per reports from Iranian state media on Monday.

The decision to form the Supreme National Defence Council was made by Iran's Supreme National Security Council, the nation's premier security body.

This new council will be led by President Masoud Pezeshkian and will focus on enhancing the defensive strategies and capabilities of Iran's armed forces.

According to the report, its members will include the speaker of Parliament, the head of the judiciary, and the chiefs of the military branches, alongside relevant ministry leaders.

While it is anticipated that the defence, intelligence, and foreign ministries will be part of this council, the report did not specify these details.

The establishment of this council follows a 12-day aerial assault carried out by Israel and the US, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,100 individuals, including high-ranking military personnel.

A ceasefire has been in place since the airstrikes targeted Iran's key nuclear facilities.

Iran previously had a similar council in place during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, a conflict that caused nearly one million casualties across both nations.
