Iran Executes Two Men Accused of Espionage and Islamic State Involvement

Dubai, Aug 6 (AP) Iran has executed two men on separate charges, with state media reporting one accused of espionage for Israel and the other accused of involvement with the Islamic State group.

A judiciary news website, Mizanonline, identified the alleged spy as Rouzbeh Vadi, who was accused of passing sensitive information to Israel's intelligence agency, the Mossad. Authorities claim Vadi provided details about an Iranian nuclear scientist targeted and killed in Israel's June airstrikes on Iran. The report did not specify the scientist's identity or when and where Vadi was arrested. According to Mizanonline, Vadi met Mossad officers on five occasions in Vienna, Austria.

In June, Israel's ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, mentioned that Israel's 12-day conflict with Iran included targeted assaults that resulted in the deaths of at least 14 Iranian physicists and engineers engaged in the nation's nuclear initiatives. During the ongoing tensions with Israel, Iran has hanged seven individuals on espionage charges, causing concern among activists about the potential for a broader wave of executions.

On a separate note, Iran executed a man identified as Mehdi Aghazadeh, who was convicted of being a member of the Islamic State. Mizanonline reported that Aghazadeh was involved in planning sabotage and received military training in Syria and Iraq before entering Iran illegally alongside a four-member team. Iranian security forces reportedly killed his team during a clash.

The Iranian authorities emphasized that the Supreme Court upheld the lower court's verdicts, ensuring that all legal protocols were observed prior to the executions, as stated by Mizanonline. (AP)
