Singapore, Oct 23 (PTI) – A 39-year-old man of Indian descent has been charged with setting off fireworks in Singapore during Diwali celebrations, contravening the city-state's prohibition on such activities, local media reported. Dilip Kumar Nirmal Kumar is accused of igniting fireworks on an open field at Carlisle Road last week, which constitutes a breach of the Guns, Explosives and Weapons Control Act of 2021, according to Channel News Asia. The incident came to light following the online circulation of a video capturing the fireworks. The police confirmed that a report had been filed and investigations were initiated, as per the report.

Dilip appeared in court via video link on Thursday, a protocol for those in custody, and is scheduled to reappear on November 20. Unauthorized use of a banned explosive carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine that may reach SGD 100,000 (USD 77,000).
