Positive Shift in India-China Relations: Wang Yi’s Optimistic Outlook

Beijing, Aug 19 (PTI) - Indian and Chinese relations appear to be moving positively towards cooperation, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

He emphasized that both nations should see each other as partners rather than adversaries. Wang, who arrived in New Delhi on Monday, shared these thoughts during his meeting with India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, reports official media on Tuesday.

His visit is a precursor to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. During the meeting, Wang highlighted the positive trajectory towards cooperation in China-India relations.

He noted this year as the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and India, suggesting that lessons from the past, including the recent four-year freeze after the Eastern Ladakh standoff, should serve as guidance.

Wang expressed the necessity for both nations to have correct strategic perceptions, seeing each other as opportunities instead of threats.

He encouraged channeling resources towards development and revitalization, as reported by state-run Xinhua. Wang proposed exploring sustainable pathways for major neighboring countries to coexist with respect and trust, aiming for mutual growth and win-win scenarios.

He reassured that China desires to adhere to principles of friendliness, mutual benefit, and inclusivity, aiming to work alongside neighboring countries, including India, to create a harmonious environment.

Wang further called for removal of barriers, expansion of cooperation, and efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, indicating a promising mutual revitalization process that could stabilize Asia and the global stage.

He acknowledged that the nations are implementing leaders' consensus, gradually resuming dialogues, maintaining border peace, and enabling resumed pilgrimages to sacred Tibetan sites for Indian pilgrims.

Wang's primary mission in India is to engage in another round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary issue with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Doval and Wang are appointed SRs for the border dialogue. Doval's earlier visit to China in December for the 23rd round of talks with Wang followed decisions by national leaders to revitalize dialogues during their meeting in Kazan, Russia, alongside the BRICS summit.
