Imran Khan Endorses Pakistan-Saudi Defense Pact

Lahore, Sep 23 (PTI) - Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently incarcerated, expressed support for the recent defense pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. He noted that discussions for such an agreement had been initiated during his administration.

The Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, which was signed in Riyadh last week, declares that an attack on one country will be considered an attack on both.

Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, conveyed his approval through a message on his verified X handle stating, “Pakistan's defense pact with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a welcome development. Discussions for such an agreement were ongoing during our time in government as well.”

Having been incarcerated since August 2023 on several charges, Khan emphasized that safeguarding the Haramain Sharifain (Mecca and Medina) is a cherished goal for every Muslim, and it is an honor for every Pakistani to be part of this commitment.

Skepticism has arisen from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), with claims that Khan would not support the pact, suggesting that he aligned himself with Israel.

A video featuring Khan with Saudi leaders has circulated on social media, fueling political debate. PML-N leaders have accused “arrogant Imran” of undermining Pakistan's relations with Riyadh during his time in office.

Defense cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has a historical background, dating back to the 1960s, with Pakistani troops stationed in the Gulf kingdom at different intervals.
