Greece offers free vacations for those evacuated in Rhodes wildfires

Greece will offer free vacations to those who were evacuated from the holiday island of Rhodes in July as severe wildfires plagued the area. Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis said travellers will be able to avail this “next spring or next fall.”

Over 19,000 tourists were evacuated from the island, with most being from the United Kingdom. While details were not offered now, Mitsotakis said the vacations may be for a week.

The Greek PM made the announcement on ‘Good Morning Britain’, a popular chat show in the United Kingdom.

“The Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes, next spring or next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island,” he said.

European allies joined hands to assist Greece’s effort to extinguish the blaze. Water-dropping planes and helicopters were frequently seen flying over the fire, Associated Press reported.
