German Foreign Minister Seeks Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Jakarta, Aug 20 (AP) Germany's Foreign Minister has urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Hamas-held hostages following a meeting with Indonesia's Foreign Minister in Jakarta on Wednesday. Johann Wadephul and his Indonesian counterpart, Sugiono, highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the Israel-Hamas conflict, advocating for a two-state solution as the only viable resolution. "The goal for all of us is clear: a two-state solution, which must be negotiated," Wadephul stated. Sugiono emphasized the importance of addressing geopolitical challenges and increasing trade opportunities during the constructive talks. Indonesia, a staunch supporter of Palestine, does not recognize Israel. Wadephul acknowledged Germany's special relationship with Israel and expressed a commitment to responsible discussions. Germany supports Israel's stance against Hamas but urges measures to relieve Gazan suffering. Wadephul noted a current opportunity for conflict resolution, involving multiple neighboring nations. His visit to Indonesia and Japan aims to strengthen economic relations and tackle global trade issues. Amid new U.S. tariffs affecting Indonesia and the EU, Germany remains Indonesia's chief European trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching USD 6.15 billion last year. Germany also invested over USD 343 million in Indonesia in 2024. Discussions on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are expected to conclude by 2026. Sugiono mentioned Germany's commitment of 1.6 billion Euros (USD 1.8 billion) to support Indonesia's transition to clean energy. Wadephul praised Indonesia's mediating efforts in regional conflicts, cementing its role as a stabilizing force in Southeast Asia. (AP) NPK NPK
