Several hundred far right activists marched through the streets of Paris on Saturday in a show of strength and as a tribute to one of theirs, who died as he tried to flee the police in 1994.

The demonstrators, from France and abroad, bore flags displaying a Celtic cross and chanted “Europe, Youth, Revolution," a slogan borrowed from a 1960s Italian fascist youth organisation.

Along the route, a handful of onlookers expressed their anger at the display of far right symbols.

Thirty years ago, 22-year-old nationalist activist Sébastien Deyzieu fell to his death as he raced up the stairs of a Paris building to escape the police in the wake of a far right protest.

Police had tried to ban the protest but a judge ruled against it on Saturday morning, saying organisers had a constitutional right to hold the demonstration.
