Education adviser C R Abrar on Tuesday met the bereaved family of 25-year-old Dipu Das, who was killed by a mob and his body set on fire on December 18 in Mymensingh.
&ldquo;The state has taken the responsibilities of taking care of Dipu Das&rsquo; child, wife and parents,&rdquo; Abrar said, calling the killing of the garment factory worker a &ldquo;brutal crime which has no excuse&rdquo;.
Abrar said ahead of meeting the family, he held talks with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who asked him to convey to them the government&rsquo;s &ldquo;profound sorrow and deepest condolences&rdquo;.
According to newspaper reports, Das&rsquo; father Rabi Chandra Das demanded justice for his son&rsquo;s killing, describing the condition of the family to the adviser. Yunus&rsquo;s office, meanwhile, reconfirmed that financial and welfare assistance would be provided to Das&rsquo; family, and relevant authorities would remain in close contact with them in the coming period.
Twelve people have been held so far for their alleged involvement in the murder. Yunus&rsquo; press wing in a statement on Tuesday said, &ldquo;allegations, rumours or differences of belief can never excuse violence, and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands&rdquo;.
&ldquo;The government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the rule of law, noting that the authority to investigate alleged offences and ensure justice through due process rests solely with the state,&rdquo; it said.
Das&rsquo; killing sparked widespread protests by factory workers, students and rights groups in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh, while India expressed its concerns as well.
The mob attack coincided with the death of a radical right-wing cultural group Inqilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman Hadi at a Singapore hospital six days after he was shot by masked gunmen in Dhaka. Hadi was a prominent face in the anti-government protests last year that toppled Sheikh Hasina's government.
Following his death, Bangladesh witnessed a fresh wave of unrest, with a mob setting alight the offices of the mass circulation Daily Star and Prothom Alo and two leading cultural groups, Chhayanot and the Udichi Shilpi Goshti, which were founded in the 1960s.

The US will end the random H-1B visa lottery and introduce a weighted system prioritising higher-paid, skilled foreign workers, effective from February 2026.

The US Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday it was replacing its longstanding lottery system for H-1B work visas with a new approach that prioritises skilled, higher-paid foreign workers.
The change follows a series of actions by the Trump administration aimed at reshaping a visa program that critics say has become a pipeline for overseas workers willing to work for lower pay, but supporters say drives innovation.
&ldquo;The existing random selection process of H-1B registrations was exploited and abused by US employers who were primarily seeking to import foreign workers at lower wages than they would pay American workers,&rdquo; said US Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesman Matthew Tragesser.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing a USD 100,000 annual H-1B visa fee on highly skilled workers, which is being challenged in court. The president also rolled out a USD 1 million &ldquo;gold card&rdquo; visa as a pathway to US citizenship for wealthy individuals.
A press release announcing the new rule says it is &ldquo;in line with other key changes the administration has made, such as the Presidential Proclamation that requires employers to pay an additional USD 100,000 per visa as a condition of eligibility.&rdquo;
Historically, H-1B visas have been awarded through a lottery system. This year, Amazon was by far the top recipient, with more than 10,000 visas approved, followed by Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Apple and Google. California has the highest concentration of H-1B workers.
The new system will &ldquo;implement a weighted selection process that will increase the probability that H-1B visas are allocated to higher-skilled and higher-paid&rdquo; foreign workers, according to Tuesday's press release.
It will go into effect Feb 27, 2026, and will apply to the upcoming H-1B cap registration season.
Supporters of the H-1B program say it is an important pathway to hiring healthcare workers and educators. They say it drives innovation and economic growth in the US and allows employers to fill jobs in specialised fields.
Critics argue that the visas often go to entry-level positions rather than senior roles requiring specialised skills. While the program is intended to prevent wage suppression or the displacement of US workers, critics say companies can pay lower wages by classifying jobs at the lowest skill levels, even when the workers hired have more experience.
The number of new visas issued annually is capped at 65,000, plus an additional 20,000 for people with a master's degree or higher.

The head of Libya's armed forces and four other high ranking military officials died late Tuesday when their business jet crashed shortly after taking off from Ankara, officials in Turkey's capital and Tripoli said.
The wreckage of their Falcon 50 aircraft was located by Turkish security personnel in the Haymana district near Ankara, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. Three crew members were also killed.
Libya's Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah said on his Facebook page: "It is with deep sadness and great sorrow that we learnt of the death of the Libyan army's chief of general staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Haddad."
Haddad earlier Tuesday held talks in Ankara with Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler, and his Turkish counterpart, Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, and was returning to Tripoli.
Yerlikaya said on X that Haddad's jet took off from Ankara's Esenboga airport at 1710 GMT, and "contact was lost" 42 minutes later.
The aircraft issued an emergency landing notification near Haymana -- 74 kilometres (45 miles) from Ankara -- but contact could not be reestablished, the minister said.
A senior Turkish official said the plane requested an emergency landing because of electrical failure 16 minutes after it took off.
The jet carried eight passengers including Haddad, four members of his entourage and three crew members "reported an emergency to the air traffic control centre due to an electrical failure, asking for an emergency landing," Burhanettin Duran, head of the presidency's communications directorate, said on X.
Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said the Ankara chief prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the incident.
-'Like a bomb'-
Several Turkish media outlets broadcast images showing the sky lit up by an explosion not far from the location where the aircraft sent a signal.
Burhan Cicek, a local in Haymana, recalled the moment when the plane crashed.
"I heard a big sound of explosion. It was like a bomb," he told AFP.
Libya's ambassador to Ankara was also at the site.
Walid Ellafi, Libyan minister of state for communication and political affairs, told local television channel Libya al-Ahrar that the Turkish government informed his government of the incident.
"We received a call from the Turkish authorities immediately after the incident, reporting that contact with the aircraft had been lost," the minister said.
"All contact with the aircraft was lost about half an hour after takeoff from Ankara airport due to a technical problem," he said.
"We are awaiting the conclusions of the Turkish investigation, and it appears that the plane crashed."
The minister said the others on the aircraft were Haddad's advisor, Mohammed Al-Assawi, as well as Major General Al-Fitouri Ghraibil, Major General Mohammed Jumaa, and their escort, Mohammed Al-Mahjoub.
Haddad had been the army's chief of general staff since August 2020 and was appointed by then-prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj.
Libya is split between a UN-recognised government in Tripoli, led by Dbeibah, and commander Khalifa Haftar's administration in the east.
The North African country has been divided since a NATO-backed revolt toppled and killed longtime leader Moamer Kadhafi in 2011.
Turkey has close ties with the UN-backed government in Tripoli, to which it provides economic and military support and there have been frequent visits between both sides.
But Ankara has recently also reached out to the rival administration in the east, with the head of Turkey's intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, meeting with Haftar in Benghazi in August.

A new batch of Jeffrey Epstein files released Tuesday contains numerous references to President Donald Trump, including documents detailing flights he took on his then friend's private jet, and other claims that his Justice Department described as "untrue and sensationalist."
The latest release contains reams of previously unseen material from the investigation into Epstein, a wealthy US financier who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking underage girls.
A first collection of heavily redacted files made public last Friday sparked criticism that the Justice Department was deliberately excluding references to Trump.
Trump figures prominently, however, in the thousands of documents published on Tuesday, underlining his close ties to the disgraced financier who was already a convicted sex offender when the more serious trafficking case began.
The Justice Department issued a statement defending the 79-year-old Republican shortly after the files dropped, saying some documents "contain untrue and sensationalist claims made against President Trump."
Trump, who is not accused of any wrongdoing, fought for months to prevent release of the vast trove of documents about Epstein.
But a rebellion inside Trump's Republican Party forced him to sign off on a law mandating release of all the documents.
The extraordinary move reflected intense political pressure to address what many Americans, including Trump's own supporters, have long suspected to be a cover-up to protect rich and powerful men in Epstein's orbit.
 - Private jet trips -
Trump said Monday he did not approve of the file dumps, expressing concern that people who "innocently met" Epstein over the years risked having their reputations smeared.
"Everybody was friendly with this guy," he said.
He did not immediately react to Tuesday's release.
Despite attempts to distance himself, Trump was friends for years with Epstein and has given different accounts of how he ended their relationship.
Most recently, he said he threw him out of his Florida golf club for being "a creep."
However, he has also said they fell out when Epstein "stole" young women working in the spa at his club.
The latest documents add to evidence that Trump was close to Epstein.
They include a January 2020 note from New York federal prosecutors who were investigating Epstein's associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, detailing Trump's repeated travel -- eight trips between 1993 and 1996 -- on the financier's private jet.
"Records we received yesterday reflect that Donald Trump traveled on Epstein's private jet many more times than previously has been reported (or that we were aware)," it says.
One flight reportedly had just three passengers: Epstein, Trump and an unidentified 20-year-old.
 - Delays -
One Trump reference was swiftly disputed by the Department of Justice.
A handwritten letter released in Tuesday's tranche was purportedly written by Epstein, while in jail, to Larry Nassar, the former US gymnastics doctor who was imprisoned over rampant abuse of female athletes.
Epstein is shown complaining to Nassar that they are incarcerated while the "president shares our love of young, nubile girls. When a young beauty walked by he loved to 'grab snatch.'"
In a statement the DOJ said the FBI "has confirmed this alleged letter from Jeffrey Epstein to Larry Nassar is FAKE," saying it was postmarked three days after Epstein's death, and entered the mail system in Virginia, despite him being jailed in New York.
Trump critics say the government continues to slow-walk the release of embarrassing material.
At least two emails in the cache mention 10 unidentified "co-conspirators" of Epstein, and Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for the Justice Department to look into potential Epstein accomplices.
"The Department of Justice needs to shed more light on who was on the list, how they were involved, and why they chose not to prosecute," the senator said.
Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend, remains the only person convicted in connection with his crimes.

New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said she is &ldquo;deeply disturbed" by the ongoing violence against Bangladesh's Hindu minority, exemplified most recently by the brutal lynching of Das.
&ldquo;A mob beat him, set him ablaze, and left his body on a highway. Authorities have reportedly arrested twelve individuals in connection with the horrific crime,&rdquo; she said.
Rajkumar said the incident is part of a &ldquo;troubling&rdquo; pattern of religious persecution and targeted violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.
She added that the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council documented 2,442 incidents of violence against minorities and over 150 temples vandalised from August 2024 to July 2025.
&ldquo;From Queens to countries across the globe, we all share in the fear, pain, and uncertainty faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. We stand in solidarity with Bangladesh&rsquo;s Hindu community and for human rights and religious freedom globally,&rdquo; she said.
On December 19, Das was lynched to death and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Bangladesh. Das was a factory worker in Mymensingh city.
At least 12 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder.

&ldquo;You know, eight planes were shot down. That war was starting to rage, and he actually said the other day that President Trump saved 10 million lives, maybe more. So we solved all these wars. The only one I haven't solved yet is Russia, Ukraine,&rdquo; he said.
Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after a &ldquo;long night&rdquo; of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over 60 times that he &ldquo;helped settle&rdquo; the tensions between the two neighbours.
New Delhi has consistently denied any third-party intervention.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.

Bangladesh's media is facing a difficult time and the freedom of expression has been overtaken by concerns over journalists' "right to stay alive", editors of several leading Bangladeshi newspapers have said.
The remarks came on Monday in the wake of mobs vandalising and setting ablaze the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star newspapers in Dhaka on Thursday night, trapping several journalists and staff inside for hours as police and fire services were initially prevented from reaching the spot.
"Freedom of expression is no longer the main issue. Now it is about the right to stay alive," Daily Star editor and publisher Mahfuz Anam said at a press conference attended by senior politicians, business leaders and media owners.
The media in Bangladesh is facing a fight for survival, he said.
Anam said the attacks were aimed at killing journalists and staff rather than being acts of protest against specific newspapers.
Otherwise, the mob would have told journalists to leave before setting the buildings on fire, he said.
Instead, 26-27 media workers were trapped on the rooftop of The Daily Star building while the fire brigade was not allowed to reach them, Anam said.
He also cited social media messages allegedly calling for journalists of the two dailies to be hunted down and killed at their homes.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) defended its delayed intervention, saying immediate action could have worsened the situation.
"The reason we could not go into action there was to ensure that no human life was lost,&rdquo; DMP Additional Commissioner Nazrul Islam told reporters.
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has said nine people have been arrested so far in connection with the attacks on the offices of the two newspapers and cultural organisations Chhayanaut and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, following the death of radical right-wing youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
The newspapers were accused by the attackers of "serving the interests" of India and the deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
A staunch India critic, 32-year-old Hadi was a key figure in last year's pro-democracy uprising that ousted Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
The 32-year-old Inqilab Mancha spokesperson died while undergoing treatment in Singapore on Thursday last week. Hadi was a candidate for the scheduled February 12 general elections.
While the interim government condemned the attacks, it described the perpetrators as fringe elements, drawing criticism from rights groups and journalists who said authorities failed to prevent the violence despite appeals for protection.

&ldquo;Yes, we're very concerned about the violence that we've seen in Bangladesh,&rdquo; St&eacute;phane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said at the daily press briefing on Monday.
He was responding to a question on the Secretary-General&rsquo;s response to the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and especially the lynchings of Hindus in the last few days.
"Whether it's in Bangladesh or any other country, people who don't belong to the &lsquo;majority&rsquo; need to feel safe, and all Bangladeshis need to feel safe. And we're confident that the Government will do what it can to keep every single Bangladeshi safe,&rdquo; Dujarric said.
Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was lynched to death by a mob and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Baluka in Mymensingh last week.
Two more persons were arrested on Sunday in connection with Das&rsquo;s lynching. With the latest arrests, 12 people have been held for their alleged involvement in the murder, The Daily Star newspaper reported, quoting police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources.
Meanwhile, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has said he was deeply troubled by the killing of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a leader of last year&rsquo;s protests in Bangladesh, who died of his injuries after being shot last week.
Turk called for calm and for everyone to refrain from violence.
&ldquo;Retaliation and revenge will only deepen divisions and undermine the rights of all,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I urge the authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, thorough and transparent investigation into the attack that led to Hadi&rsquo;s death, and to ensure due process and accountability for those responsible.&rdquo;
With the parliamentary elections scheduled for February, Turk said it was vital to ensure an environment in which all individuals can participate safely and peacefully in public life, and freely express different views.
&ldquo;I urge the authorities to uphold the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and security of journalists at this critical time, and prevent further escalation of unrest,&rdquo; Turk said.
The High Commissioner said his Office stands ready to work with the authorities and all stakeholders to support efforts that uphold human rights and prevent further violence.

Rahman, the 60-year-old son of ailing former premier Khaleda Zia, has emerged as a leading contender for prime minister in the upcoming February general elections.
Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and heir to the influential Zia family, is set to return home on Thursday. After 17 years in exile, Rahman has left London for Bangladesh, returning home with his family and ending a long wait for the BNP leaders and activists, BDnews24 reported.
Rahman boarded a Biman Bangladesh flight at 12:15 am Bangladesh time on Thursday with his wife Zubaida Rahman, and daughter Zaima Rahman, the report added.
The flight carrying Rahman has landed at Sylhet Osmani Airport at 9:59 am on Thursday. From here it will be reaching Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport at 11:20 am, the Dhaka Tribune reported. Hafiz Ahmed, director of Sylhet Osmani Airport, confirmed the information to Dhaka Tribune.
After landing, Rahman, on his official Facebook account, posted a photo of himself with a caption: &ldquo;Back in Bangladesh skies after 6,314 days!&rdquo; Leaders and activists of the UK unit of the BNP accompanied him to the airport and saw him off up to the security cordon.
"This will be a defining political moment,&rdquo; BNP spokesman Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said while referring to the return of Rahman, who is the elder son of Zia.
The BNP has made extensive preparations to welcome its acting chairman. Party Standing Committee members are set to receive him at the airport, followed by a reception programme.
After arrival, Rahman will travel by road to Evercare Hospital. On the way, he will attend a brief reception arranged by the party, the report added.
Rahman&rsquo;s return comes as the BNP emerged as the forerunner in the changed political landscape after toppling of the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League government in a student-led violent movement dubbed the July Uprising on August 5, 2024.
The party's partner during its 2001-2006 tenure in power, Jamaat-e-Islami and its Islamist allies, now appeared as BNP&rsquo;s main rival as the interim government disbanded Awami League under the country&rsquo;s tough Anti-Terrorism Act through an executive order.
BNP announced Rahman&rsquo;s return on December 12, sparking speculations as in a Facebook post on November 29, Rahman said, &ldquo;like any child,&rdquo; he longs to be near his critically ill mother at her &ldquo;moment of crisis.&rdquo;

Flash flood warnings were in effect in Los Angeles and most of southern California on Wednesday as one of the worst Christmas storms in recent memory brought heavy rain and fears of deadly mudslides.
Driven by an atmospheric river known as "the Pineapple Express," which moves heavy moisture from the tropical climes of Hawaii to rain on the West Coast, the storm is expected to deliver months' worth of rain over the next few days.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in several counties, including Los Angeles, to facilitate the rapid mobilization and allocation of resources if needed.
"Life-threatening flash flooding continues over Southern California today and tomorrow; heavy mountain snow and high winds also ongoing," the National Weather Service (NWS) said, adding that "lives and property are in great danger."
The first burst of heavy rain hit the region Tuesday night, leaving Los Angeles with fallen trees and some debris in the streets, as well as minor flooding that hampered traffic.
The rainfall intensified early Wednesday, leaving thousands of people in southern California without power due to downed lines caused by the fury of the Christmas storm.
Late Wednesday the first storm moved out of the Los Angeles area, "but another storm is expected to move in later tonight into Christmas Day," weather officials warned.
Some communities already received 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) of rain in the first storm, forecasters said.

Due to fire damage, the terrain is susceptible to mudslides from heavy rain.
While many were still hoping to drive to spend the holidays with family, transportation officials were busy announcing road and freeway closures due to flooding, fallen trees and mud flows across Southern California.
The Red Cross opened shelters in several communities as some residents in Southern California received immediate evacuation orders.
Authorities were responding to a series of accidents Wednesday, and several major roads were closed due to flash flood warnings.
Ariel Cohen, an NWS meteorologist, warned that from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, "many areas will likely experience significant flooding, along with rockslides and mudslides, especially in the higher elevations."
"If you were planning to travel on the roads during Christmas, please reconsider your plans," he added.
 - 'Doesn't feel safe' -
However, many Angelenos were still out and about Wednesday, buying last-minute gifts, grocery shopping, even jogging.
For some though, Christmas travel was upended.
"We decided to stay home," said Jim Lewis, who opted against going to his cousins in nearby Pasadena and was doing last-minute shopping in the city instead.
"We've been receiving all these alerts, it doesn't feel safe, I don't feel like driving there at dark," he told AFP.
Larissa Peet, who was planning a party, said her celebration was still on.
"Nothing that we're doing differently. Just hanging out, eating, drinking and having a good time," she said.
In addition to the threat of flooding, meteorologists are forecasting wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour (nearly 130 kilometers per hour) in the mountains and deserts of Los Angeles County.
Some Californian communities are still reeling from thousands of wildfires that killed 31 people across the state during 2025, including residential neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
In the Sierra Nevada range along the eastern border of California, more than a foot (30 centimeters) of snow had already fallen this week, with up to five feet forecast before the storm is through.

Pakistan on Tuesday finalised the privatisation of its national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), marking a major milestone in the government&rsquo;s efforts to exit the loss-making airline.
The deal, concluded after a competitive bidding process in Islamabad, saw PIA sold for Rs 4,300 crore.
The ceremony was attended by the three pre-qualified bidders: investment firm Arif Habib, Lucky Cement, and private airline Airblue. Each participant submitted sealed bids into a transparent box as part of the formal procedure.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praised the sale, saying, &ldquo;Alhamdulillah, the successful privatisation of PIA marks a historic milestone. Congratulations to the Arif Habib Group on this achievement. This milestone reflects the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for reforming state enterprises, restoring PIA&rsquo;s glory, and making air travel accessible and reliable for all Pakistanis and international travellers.&rdquo;
Dar added, &ldquo;I had the privilege of supporting this process through chairing the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation. I commend the Privatisation Commission for conducting a professional, transparent, and highly competitive process, and thank the Federal Government and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their full support in successfully concluding the transition.&rdquo;
Competitive Bidding
In the second phase of bidding, Arif Habib emerged as the top contender with an initial offer of PKR 115 billion (around Rs 3,680 crore). Lucky Cement bid PKR 105.5 billion (Rs 3,376 crore), while Airblue placed PKR 26.5 billion (Rs 848 crore).
Following government rules, the two highest bidders&mdash;Arif Habib and Lucky Cement&mdash;entered an open auction. Bids were raised in stages until Arif Habib offered PKR 135 billion (approximately Rs 4,320 crore), a bid Lucky Cement did not match. &ldquo;We congratulate Arif Habib group,&rdquo; a Lucky Cement representative said after withdrawing.
Deal Structure
The privatisation initially covered a 75% stake in PIA. The successful bidder now has 90 days to purchase the remaining 25% shares. Of the funds from the 75% sale, 92.5% will be reinvested in the airline, with the remainder going to the government.
Additionally, the investor is required to commit PKR 80 billion (around Rs 2,560 crore) over the next five years to upgrade operations, fleet quality, and service standards.
To make PIA more attractive to buyers, the government assumed responsibility for its liabilities, which stood at PKR 654 billion (about Rs 20,928 crore) last year.
Transparency and Government Statements
The entire bidding process was broadcast live on local television channels to ensure openness and public trust. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked officials and the Privatisation Commission, calling it &ldquo;the largest transaction of its kind in Pakistan&rsquo;s history&rdquo; and praising the transparent manner in which it was conducted.
Background
Once among the world&rsquo;s leading airlines, PIA has suffered years of mismanagement, rising losses, and declining service quality. Attempts to revive the carrier failed repeatedly, leaving the government with little choice but to privatise it.

Bangladesh interim government aims to improve ties with India, separating economic interests from political rhetoric, approving 50,000 tonnes of rice import to benefit trade and diplomacy.

Bangladesh interim government's finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has taken steps to ease strained ties with New Delhi while his administration was working to develop economic relations with India by separating economic interests from "political rhetoric."
"The chief adviser is working to improve diplomatic relations with India, and he himself has also been speaking to various stakeholders on the issue," he told reporters after a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase at his office.
Asked if Yunus directly spoke to India, Ahmed said the chief adviser "has not" but he did speak to those associated with the matter.
"Our trade policy is not driven by political considerations. If importing rice from India is cheaper than sourcing it from Vietnam or elsewhere, then it makes economic sense to buy the staple from India," he said.
The adviser, an economist, however, expressed optimism that bilateral relations would not decline further. Ahmed said Bangladesh on Tuesday approved a proposal to purchase 50,000 tonnes of rice from India, "as a means to seek good relations."
He said importing this rice would benefit Bangladesh, as sourcing rice from Vietnam, a major alternative, instead of India, would cost BDT 10 (USD 0.082) more per kilogram.
Ahmed's comments came as diplomatic analysts said the Dhaka-New Delhi relation was now at its lowest ebb since Bangladesh's 1971 Independence from Pakistan, with repeated summoning of their envoys in both countries and protests in front of Bangladeshi and Indian missions in both capitals and elsewhere in the two countries.
But the adviser said, "The situation has not reached such a bad stage."
"From the outside, it may sound like many things are happening...However, there are some statements that are difficult to shut out," Ahmed said.
Asked if "people or external forces" were making anti-India statements, he said, "We do not want any bitterness between the two nations. If anyone from outside is trying to instigate problems that is not in the interest of either country."
But, he said, these incidents did not represent the "national expression" and were rather "creating complicated situations for Bangladesh."

The lawmakers have said that the Bangladeshi people deserve to be able to choose an elected government in a free and fair election.
Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Representative Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the Subcommittee on South and Central Asia Representative Bill Huizenga, Ranking Member Subcommittee on South and Central Asia Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and Member of Congress Julie Johnson on Tuesday sent a letter to Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh Mohammed Yunus expressing concern over the total ban of a political party ahead of elections in February.
The letter&rsquo;s cosigners include Representative Tom Suozzi.
The lawmakers said that it is vital that the interim government work with parties across the political spectrum to create the conditions for free and fair elections that allow the voice of the Bangladeshi people to be expressed peacefully through the ballot box, as well as reforms that restore confidence in the integrity and nonpartisanship of state institutions.
&ldquo;We are concerned that this cannot happen if the government suspends activities of political parties or again restarts the flawed International Crimes Tribunal,&rdquo; they said.
They pointed out that the Department of State and many other international observers have noted that the 2018 and 2024 General Elections in Bangladesh were not free or fair.
In a February fact-finding report, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights estimated that security services killed 1,400 people during the protests in July and August last year.
&ldquo;Genuine accountability for these acts and others should model the values of Bangladesh&rsquo;s democracy, rather than continue a cycle of retaliation," the lawmakers said.
"Freedom of association, as well as the principle of individual rather than collective criminal responsibility, are fundamental human rights. We are concerned that the decision to fully suspend the activity of any one political party, rather than focus on persons determined to have committed crimes or gross violations of human rights through the due process of law, is inconsistent with those principles,&rdquo; the lawmakers added.
They expressed hope that the Yunus government or an elected successor will revisit the decision to suspend the activity of any one political party.
&ldquo;Ultimately, the Bangladeshi people deserve to be able to choose an elected government in a free and fair election in which all political parties can participate so that their voices are represented,&rdquo; they said.
Bangladesh has banned all activities of deposed premier Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League party under an overnight revised anti-terrorism law. Awami League and its affiliated organisations were banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2025 until Bangladesh&rsquo;s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) completed the trial of its leaders and activists.
