Deadly 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan

Kabul, Sep 1 (AP) — A powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 250 lives and left over 500 individuals injured, according to official reports.

The earthquake struck late on Sunday, affecting a series of towns within Kunar province, close to the city of Jalalabad in the adjacent Nangarhar province. The seismic event registered a magnitude of 6.0 at 11:47 p.m. and was centered 27 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad, as reported by the US Geological Survey.

With a depth of just 8 kilometers, the quake was particularly shallow, making it more likely to cause significant destruction.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority issued a statement confirming that at least 250 fatalities occurred, and 500 individuals sustained injuries across the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare.
