The election process that follows a papal death is highly confidential. It will culminate with white smoke emerging from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signifying the selection of a new pope. Cardinals&mdash;key collaborators of the pope, managing crucial Vatican departments and dioceses globally&mdash;convene in a secret conclave to elect a new leader for the Roman Catholic Church's nearly 1.4 billion members if they are younger than 80.
This intricate voting process will indicate whether the current cardinals, many appointed by Pope Francis, favor his liberal social values and reformist agenda or if they feel the Church needs a period of consolidation.
The cardinals will set the start date for the conclave upon their arrival in Rome. Appointed exclusively by a pope, cardinals carry his legacy, as they are influential senior clerics and potential pontiff candidates. As of April 21, the Vatican reported 252 cardinals, 135 of whom are eligible electors.
Of these, 108 were appointed by Francis, 22 by Benedict, and five by John Paul II. Robert McElroy, the Archbishop of Washington as of March, is known as a progressive and vocal supporter of Francis's priorities, including environmental protection and a more inclusive approach to LGBTQ Catholics.
A PAPACY'S INFLUENCE &nbsp; A pope&rsquo;s appointments can increase the chances of a successor with similar church and societal perspectives. However, the cardinals might choose someone with differing theological views if they believe that person is better suited to the Church's internal dynamics or the historical context of the election.
Pope Benedict succeeded John Paul II partly due to his long association with him and the desire for continuity. However, after the "Vatileaks" scandal revealed administrative issues under Italian oversight, many cardinals felt an "outsider" was needed and chose Argentina&rsquo;s Jorge Mario Bergoglio&mdash;the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years.

Terrorists opened fire on Tuesday at a famed meadow near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people, mostly tourists, in what is the deadliest attack in the Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019.

Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging a federal funding freeze and alleging unconstitutional interference in academic affairs.

Harvard sued US President Donald Trump's administration Monday in a sharp escalation of the fight between the prestigious university and the Republican, who has threatened its funding and sought to impose outside political supervision.
Trump has sought to bring several prestigious universities to heel over claims they tolerated campus anti-Semitism, threatening their budgets, tax-exempt status and the enrolment of foreign students, but Harvard has refused to bow.
"This case involves the Government's efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decision making at Harvard," the Ivy League university said in a lawsuit filed in a Massachusetts federal court that named several other institutions targeted by Trump.
"The Government's actions flout not just the First Amendment, but also federal laws and regulations," said the complaint, which called Trump's actions "arbitrary and capricious."
Trump is furious at Harvard for rejecting government supervision of its admissions, hiring practices and political slant and last week ordered the freezing of $2.2 billion in federal funding to the storied institution.
The lawsuit calls for the freezing of funds and conditions imposed on federal grants to be declared unlawful, as well as for the Trump administration to pay Harvard's costs.
Trump and his White House team have publicly justified their campaign against universities as a reaction to what they say is uncontrolled "anti-Semitism" and a need to reverse diversity programs aimed at addressing historical oppression of minorities.
The administration claims protests against Israel's war in Gaza that swept across US college campuses last year were rife with anti-Semitism.
Many US universities, including Harvard, cracked down on the protests over the allegations at the time, with the Cambridge-based institution placing 23 students on probation and denying degrees to 12 others, according to protest organizers.
"Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning, and should not be considered on any list of the World's Great Universities or Colleges," Trump said on his Truth Social platform last week.
"Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds."
 - 'Sweeping freeze' -
Harvard President Alan Garber said that Trump's administration had launched "numerous investigations" into the university's operations.
Last week, Garber flatly refused to "negotiate over (Harvard's) independence or its constitutional rights."
Other top institutions, including Columbia University, have bowed to less sweeping demands from the Trump administration, which claims that the educational elite is too left-wing.
The Department of Homeland Security has also threatened Harvard's ability to enroll international students unless it turns over records on visa-holders' "illegal and violent activities."
International students made up 27.2 percent of Harvard's enrollment this academic year, according to its website.
"Make no mistake: Harvard rejects anti-Semitism and discrimination in all of its forms and is actively making structural reforms to eradicate anti-Semitism on campus," said Monday's lawsuit.
"But rather than engage with Harvard regarding those ongoing efforts, the Government announced a sweeping freeze of funding for medical, scientific, technological, and other research that has nothing at all to do with anti-Semitism."

"To seek one&rsquo;s own temporary selfish interests at the expense of others' is to seek the skin of a tiger," the ministry warned, indicating that such an approach is destined to fail and cause widespread harm.
"China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China's interests," the spokesperson emphasized. "If such a situation arises, China will never accept it and will resolutely take reciprocal countermeasures."
Beijing also criticized Washington for "abusing" tariffs on all trading partners under the guise of "equivalence," while compelling countries into "reciprocal tariffs" negotiations.
China remains steadfast in defending its rights and interests and is eager to build solidarity with global partners, according to the ministry.

Beijing has vehemently criticized the US for what it terms "unilateralism and protectionism" and warned against a regression to an international order dominated by the "law of the jungle."

Climate change could be resulting in higher levels of arsenic in rice, potentially increasing lifetime cancer and health risks for people in Asian countries by 2050, according to a new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.
Researchers from Columbia University, US, explained that an increase in temperatures above 2 degrees Celsius and rising levels of carbon dioxide could be causing changes in soil chemistry, favouring arsenic, which gets more easily absorbed into a rice grain.
Contaminated soil and irrigated water while growing rice are known to increase inorganic arsenic in rice.
An increased exposure to arsenic is known to heighten the risk of cancers of the lung, bladder and skin, among others. Rice can also absorb additional arsenic from water used for cooking.
"Our results suggest that this increase in arsenic levels could significantly elevate the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and other non-cancer health effects," author Lewis Ziska, associate professor of environmental health sciences, Columbia University, said.
"As rice is a dietary staple in many parts of the world, these changes could lead to a substantial rise in the global burden of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other arsenic-related health issues," Ziska said.
Studies have revealed rice consumption to be a major health threat to people in South and Southeast Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, where rice is the staple food.
The combined effects of rising CO2 and temperatures on arsenic accumulation in rice have not been studied in detail until now, the team said.
In this study, the researchers measured the effects of rising temperatures and carbon dioxide on 28 rice strains over 10 years in the field. Using models, inorganic arsenic doses and health risks for seven Asian countries -- Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam -- were estimated.
"We found that temperature and CO2 act synergistically to increase arsenic concentrations in rice, compounding dietary arsenic exposures for rice consumers and leading to projected cancer cases in the tens of millions among populations of Asian countries in 2050," according to the study.
Projected average cases of bladder and lung cancer in 2050 were found to increase in proportion with exposure to arsenic, with the highest risk projections (44 per cent) seen for rising temperatures and carbon dioxide levels.
China was projected to see 1.34 crore cases of cancer attributable to arsenic in rice in 2050 -- the highest among the seven countries studied.
"Emerging evidence also suggests that arsenic exposure may be linked to diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, neurodevelopmental issues, and immune system effects," Ziska said.
The authors suggested measures to reduce arsenic exposure, including breeding plants to minimise arsenic uptake and improved soil management in rice paddies, along with public health initiatives.

Following a campaign dominated by Trump's tariffs and annexation threats, Carney promised to chart "a new path forward" in a world "fundamentally changed" by a United States that is newly hostile to free trade.
"We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons," said Carney, who led the central banks of Canada and Britain before entering politics earlier this year.
"We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7," he said.
Carney's Liberals secured control of Canada's parliament but may fall just short of a majority.
That will require making deals with smaller parties but still marks an extraordinary comeback for the Liberals, who at the start of the year looked headed for an electoral wipeout.
Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party had been on track to win the vote but Trump's attacks, combined with the departure of unpopular former prime minister Justin Trudeau, transformed the race.
Carney, who replaced Trudeau as prime minister just last month, convinced voters that his experience managing economic crises made him the ideal candidate to defy Trump.
Poilievre fell short of becoming prime minister, but his party was on track to form a strong opposition.
He conceded defeat on Tuesday and promised to work with the Liberals to counter Trump.
"We will always put Canada first," Poilievre told supporters in Canada's capital.
"Conservatives will work with the prime minister and all parties with the common goal of defending Canada's interests and getting a new trade deal that puts these tariffs behind us while protecting our sovereignty."

When the Liberal win was announced, cheers of joy erupted at the Ottawa venue where Liberal supporters were watching the results.
"I'm happy in the sense that we've got somebody that can speak to Mr. Trump on his level," said Dorothy Goubault, 72.
"Mr. Trump is a business person. Mr. Carney is a business person, and I think they can both relate."
Before Trudeau resigned, Trump had mocked him, calling the prime minister "governor" as he urged Canada to become the 51st US state.
Goubault said she expects that mockery to stop.
"It's not the governor anymore, it's the prime minister of Canada, and it's not the 51st state anymore. It's 'We are Canada!'"
Liberal lawmaker and a member of Carney's cabinet, Steven Guilbeault, tied the outcome to Trump.
"The numerous attacks by President Trump on the Canadian economy, but not just the economy, on our sovereignty and our very identity, have really mobilized Canadians, and I think they saw in Prime Minister Carney someone who has experience on the world stage, someone who has experience with the economy," he told the CBC.
Carney led the Bank of Canada through the 2008-2009 financial crisis and headed the Bank of England through the turmoil surrounding the 2016 Brexit vote.

Thailand: A small police plane crashed into the sea near a popular beach town in Thailand, killing at least five people on board, officials said.
The plane was conducting a test flight to prepare for parachute training in Hua Hin district before it crashed around 8 am, said Royal Thai Police spokesperson Archayon Kraithong.
Officials did not immediately share the model of the propeller plane, but photos from the scene appear to show a Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter.
The plane crashed near Hua Hin Airport, said the public relations department of Prachuab Kiri Khan province.

The photos show the plane in the sea about 100 meters off shore. The body of the plane appeared to be broken in two.
There were six people on board, all police officers, Archayon said.
He initially said that five people died at the scene and one died at the hospital, but later revised the death toll to five, saying the officer who was sent to the hospital remained in critical condition but alive.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Archayon said officials are gathering evidence including data from the plane's black box.

Pope Francis, the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years, died on April 21 aged 88. He was diagnosed with double pneumonia.
