Donald Trump reacts to Jan 6 riot criminal charge recommendation by US House committee

Former US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to a Congressional committee's recommendation that criminal charges be brought against him for the Capitol Hill riots on 6 January 2021.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, "The Fake charges made by the highly partisan Unselect Committee of January 6th have already been submitted, prosecuted, and tried in the form of Impeachment Hoax #2. I won convincingly."

The former President added that the "whole business of prosecuting me is just like impeachment was - a partisan attempt to sideline me and the Republican Party".

The House committee, made up of 7 Democrats and 2 Republicans, urged the Justice Department on 19 December 2022 to bring criminal charges against Trump for a "multi-part conspiracy" to overturn election results.

At its final meeting, the committee alleged violations of four criminal statutes by Trump, in both the run-up to the riot and during the insurrection itself, as it recommended the former president for prosecution to the Justice Department.
