Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Floods and Landslides in Southeast Asia

Hanoi, Aug 27 (AP) Heavy rain unleashed flooding and landslides on Wednesday across parts of Southeast Asia, as officials reported the tragic loss of at least eight lives following a tropical storm.

In Vietnam, flooding impacted numerous northern and central provinces, leading to the death of seven individuals, with one person still missing and 34 others having sustained injuries, according to state media reports.

Nearly 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain drenched sections of northeast Vietnam overnight, prompting continued flood warnings for areas near rivers.

In northern Thailand, the city of Chiang Mai suffered a landslide that resulted in one fatality, while another person remained missing.

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that many homes were affected, with several people injured due to flash flooding and landslides across northern provinces.

The country's Meteorological Department warned of heavy downpours in northern and northeastern regions, advising residents in foothill and low-lying areas near waterways to remain on alert for potential flash floods and landslides.

This deluge was part of the aftereffects of Tropical Storm Kajiki, which struck central Vietnam on Monday afternoon, causing thousands to evacuate from high-risk zones.

Prior to impacting Vietnam, Kajiki had brought winds and rain to China's southern Hainan Island.

A 2024 scientific study has warned that oceans warmed by climate change are likely to cause cyclones in Southeast Asia to form closer to land, intensify more rapidly, and persist longer, escalating risks for urban areas.
