Denmark Summons US Diplomat Over Alleged Influence in Greenland

Denmark Summons US Diplomat Over Alleged Influence in Greenland

Copenhagen, Aug 27 (AP) Denmark's foreign minister summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen after a report by the national broadcaster on Wednesday revealed that at least three individuals connected to President Donald Trump were allegedly conducting covert influence operations in Greenland.

Greenland, the vast semi-autonomous Danish territory located in the Arctic, has piqued the interest of President Trump. Despite Denmark being a NATO ally of the United States, both Denmark and Greenland have expressed dissatisfaction over reports suggesting U.S. intelligence activities in the region.

Denmark's national broadcaster, DR, stated that unnamed government and security sources, as well as undisclosed connections in Greenland and the U.S., have suspicions about three Americans linked to Trump carrying out clandestine influence campaigns in the territory.

The report, which cited eight sources altogether, suggests that the objective may be to destabilize relations with Denmark from within Greenland's society. DR could not establish whether these individuals were acting independently or under higher orders.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, in an emailed statement from his ministry, acknowledged, “We are aware that foreign actors continue to show an interest in Greenland and its position in the Kingdom of Denmark.” He added that external attempts to influence the kingdom's future would not be surprising in the coming times.

“Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom will of course be unacceptable,” Lokke Rasmussen asserted. Consequently, he has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the U.S. chargé d'affaires for discussions at the ministry. He emphasized that the relationship between the governments of Denmark and Greenland remains “close and based on mutual trust.”
