China: Owner in quarantine, pet dog killed by health worker

There is widespread outrage in China over the killing of a pet dog by the health workers while the owner was in Covid-19 quarantine. The authorities in Jiangxi province have apologised and sacked the health worker involved.

CCTV footage of the incident posted by the dog's owner appeared to show one of the Covid health workers who were disinfecting the woman's flat beating the dog with a crowbar.

The owner said she was quarantining in a hotel that did not allow pets.

Local authorities issued a statement apologising for the incident and saying that one of the health workers had been dismissed, but claimed the dog had been the subject of a "harmless disposal".

The incident follows a similar case earlier this month when cats belonging to a quarantining resident in Chengdu were euthanised.
